WEEK 1 MARYLAND JUCO CONFERENCE RUNDOWN
Week 1 Rundown: Week 1 of the 2021 Maryland JUCO season saw twelve teams in action. Chesapeake scrimmaged Salisbury University in a double-header that did not count towards record, leaving just Frederick CC and Prince George's CC as the only schools sitting idle. Harford CC hosted and swept Anne Arundel CC in a double header to kick off the season on a bitter cold Tuesday afternoon. On Wednesday, CCBC Catonsville scored six runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to stun CCBC Essex in the first Region 20 D2 game of the season. Thursday saw Matt Backert pick up his first career win as the head coach at CCBC Dundalk as they went on the road and beat Cecil College 13-8. Hagerstown CC kicked off their trip in Vero Beach, Florida on Friday ultimately falling twice in a double header to Palm Beach State College but did bounce back on the weekend and sit now at 2-2 overall. The weekend saw a plethora of games across the Maryland JUCO Conference as well as a few out-of-conference double headers. Of note, Montgomery College went on the road Saturday and picked up two nice wins at CCBC Dundalk, CCBC Catonsville swept Allegany College of Maryland in a two-game Region 20 D2 showdown at "The Rock", and Harford CC continued to show how deep they are this season both on the mound and at the plate picking up four wins on the weekend scoring 32 runs while allowing just 8. Also to note on Sunday, first year head coach Nick Hoffner notched his first career win as the Riverhawks held on late to defeat visiting Delaware Tech CC in game one of that double-header.
