JUCO programs across the state of Maryland began preseason practices back in early January. As the calendar quickly turns and with several teams getting ready to open up their 2020 campaigns in the next few weeks, we begin our coverage of the Maryland JUCO Conference with a preseason preview of all fourteen schools. In each preview, we will take a look back at the 2019 season, examine key players that have moved on or left the program, look at some new faces and key players for the upcoming season, and finally take a sneak peak at whats ahead for the 2020 season. We continue our preseason previews with a look at the Garrett College Lakers.

2021 Season Snapshot

Garrett College was denied the opportunity to make it three straight appearances in the NJCAA Region XX DII Final Four last season after Covid-19 ended everyone's season mid-March. The Lakers entered the 2020 campaign with a much younger squad after losing several key pieces from their 2019 team that finished third. This year head coach Eric Hallenbeck in his 17th season returns a more balanced roster albeit with limited experience due to the shortened season last year.

On the mound, righty Michael Joyce returns for his third season as the ace of the Lakers staff. Lefty Skylar Kanacsky, and fellow right-handed returners Bradie Moore, Coby Howatineck, Justin Fluhart, Noah Mankin, Dylan McCartney, and Pat Bart all figure to play key roles on the staff again this season. Fairmont State transfer Kelan Hoover has the ability to make an immediate impact on the bump while fellow transfer Cam King, and freshmen Hunter White will add depth to a solid staff overall.

Offensively, third baseman Juan Pinero headlines a well balanced lineup that includes Quintin Smith and Elijah Hanible at the top of the lineup and Colby Johnson and Brandon Lucas in the middle of the order. Pinero was off to a sizzling start in 2020 batting .486 while scoring 24 runs in that thirteen game span. Peyton Carr, Nate Darwin, and Tanner George also figure to play key roles in the everyday lineup alongside key freshman Brennan White

Due to travel restrictions stemming from the current pandemic, Garrett will not travel south to open the season like they have become accustomed to in years past. Instead, the Lakers will open on the road at Harford CC on March 6th and navigate their way through six Maryland JUCO Conference opponents and twelve out-of-conference games in the opening month. A back-loaded NJCAA Region XX DII schedule in April will provide Hallenbeck the opportunity to play several guys early and solidify roles before making a push towards earning a fourth appearance in the Final Four in the last six years notwithstanding last year's shortened season.
