March is finally here and public schools have officially begun baseball tryouts, while some private schools have already begun their seasons with scrimmages and practices. As always, all Maryland Private schools will be considered in this year's weekly PBR Maryland Private Top 10 rankings while only Public schools will be considered in our traditional PBR Maryland Power 25. An update to these rankings will be released every Monday throughout the season. 

In this update, our staff takes a look at our Preseason 1-5, with quick notes on each, before releasing our full MIAA and WCAC Previews next week.

MARYLAND PRIVATE SCHOOL Preseason

No. 1 Archbishop Spalding

2022 was a big year for the Cavaliers, finishing off an impressive 27-4 record with an MIAA "A" Conference Championship, defeating John Carroll 7-2. Depth and prowess on both sides of the ball has always been the "M.O." for Spalding, and that shouldn't change too much in '23. This '23 team will look slightly different with the departures of standout shortstop Caleb Estes (Maryland), outfielder Kyle Garrett (Shenandoah), left-handed pitcher Eddie Sargent (UMBC), and a slew of other key players to college. 

Look for Parker Thomas (East Carolina), Jake Yeager (Maryland), and Nathan Wines (East Carolina) to lead the rotation, with a slew of other high octane names to follow in '23. Offensively, the infield and catching depth is deep with the likes of Thomas, Ethan McNally (James Madison), Jack McNally, Michael Joseph (UMBC), Carver Salazar and Carson Merritt all looking to lead the offensive onslaught this Spring.

 

No. 2 Georgetown Prep 

The Hoyas have been one of the more dominating programs across the Old Line State, winning their third consecutive IAC Championship in as many years in 2022. This season brings another high octane roster full of talent on both sides of the ball. 

Two-ways Tommy Roldan (Virginia) and Ryan Maxey (George Mason) will look to lead the rotation this season, with the emergence of two intriguing Sophomore arms in Andrew Duncan (Duke) and Austin Weiss (Maryland) providing solid depth. Look for Juniors Aiden Dubetsky and Jaden Ovalles to provide well needed innings for the Hoyas as well. 

Offensively, Roldan, Maxey, Duncan, Weiss and Dubetsky will all play pivotal roles at the dish. Antonio Perrotta (Virginia), Patrick Colbert, CJ Chatterton, Will Twomey, and Sam Weinstein (Appalachian State) are also names to key in on this Spring. 

 

No. 3 John Carroll

Boasting one of the more high powered offenses in the state, the Patriots will look to bounce back after a tough loss in the MIAA "A" Championship game a year ago. An offense led by the likes of Frank Adamski (Coastal Carolina), Matt Bishop (Wilson), Dallas Brooks (Maryland), Casey Carpenter, Will Rhine (Maryland), Griffin Shirk (Salisbury) and Ethan Ruiz (Salisbury) is eye-opening and is something to key in on all year long.

Pitching will be the difference maker this season with the departures of Matt Archibald (Navy), Ben Pierce (Washington & Jefferson), and Will Weiman (Goldey-Beacom). Players will need to step up like Brooks, Wyatt Krebs, Christopher Lanzilotta (Washington College) and Aaron Snyder if the Patriots want to make another deep run in 2023. 

Three very intriguing Freshmen are set to make their debut this season for John Carroll in two-ways Joseph Coudon and Pierce Quinn, as well as infielder Miguel Leon (Maryland).

 

No. 4 St. Maria Goretti

Goretti is very intriguing on both sides of the ball. Led by Junior Andrew Kerns and Sophomore Parker Sweeney (Virginia Tech) on the bump, the Gaels are extremely talented with depth provided by Junior Colin Fulmer and Sophomore Ty Hames.

Offensively, Kerns, Sweeney, Fulmer, Hames will all lead the charge, with intriguing depth provided by Juniors Will Oates, Nicholas Petruzzelo and Senior Jacob Hill. Look for power hitting first baseman Warner Harper to provide some thump in the middle of the lineup as well. 

 

No. 5 Gilman

After a struggling season in 2022, the Greyhounds look to rebound and regain the success they had in 2021. Sophomore standout Peyton Miller (Clemson) will lead the charge on the bump, with Wyatt Randolph and Cooper Sidell providing some well needed depth behind him. 

Offensively, the addition of Dominic Moats (Maryland) should provide power and speed to the lineup, with Miller, Sidell, Randolph, Adam Hicks (Gettysburg), Danny Leikus (Rhode Island) and Blake Paquette all providing key AB's this Spring.
