Using sensor technology that fits on the knob of a bat, without impeding the player, Blast Motion collected data to analyze every hitter’s swing at this year's PBR Maryland Summer Trials. During batting practice, the Blast Motion sensors measured Swing and Impact Metrics across several categories. Swing metrics measure pre-impact mechanics centered around plane, connection, and rotation while Impact metrics measure pre-impact performance outcomes based on ball contact. Below are the top performers in five of the categories measured using the Blast Motion sensors.

BLAST SWING METRICS

ON PLANE EFFICIENCY

On plane efficiency measures the percentage of your swing where the bat is on the swing plane. (MLB average is 73%).

1 Christopher Owens Jr. SS Riverdale Baptist 2022 93%
2 Carter Costango OF Western STES 2022 86%
3 Kameron Becker SS Winters Mill 2023 85%
4 Teddy Fisher OF Bethesda-CC 2022 85%
5 Will Carr OF Gonzaga (DC) 2021 85%

ROTATIONAL ACCELERATION

Rotational acceleration is how quickly your bat accelerates into the swing plane and is measured in G's (g-force). (MLB average is 16.8 G's).

1 Dalton Reinhart OF Cedar Crest (PA) 2021 24.5 g
2 Carter Costango OF Western STES 2022
24.2 g
3 Armand Ortiz OF Key 2023 20.9 g
4 Mike Wineke 1B Calvert Hall 2021 20.7 g
5 Kyle Matheny C Calvert Hall 2021 20.5 g

blast IMPACT Metrics

BAT SPEED

Bat speed is defined as the total speed of the barrel at impact. (MLB average is 70.3 mph).

1 Kyle Matheny C Calvert Hall 2021
69.9 mph
2 Dalton Reinhart OF Cedar Crest (PA) 2021
69.4 mph
3 Rob Carpenter OF Wootton 2022 68.4 mph
4 Shane Mummey SS Mount St. Joseph 2022 67.2 mph
5 Owen Liberto 2B Calvert Hall 2021 67.0 mph

POWER

Power is defined as bat mass (times) average acceleration (times) bat speed at impact and is measured in Watts. (MLB ideal range is 3.65 kw - 5.65 kw).

1 Dalton Reinhart OF Cedar Crest (PA) 2021
4.45 kw
2 Kyle Matheny C Calvert Hall 2021
4.35 kw
3 Rob Carpenter OF Wootton 2022
3.94 kw
4 Armand Ortiz OF Key 2023
3.90 kw
5 Henry Carbone OF St. Mary's 2024 3.83 kw

PEAK HAND SPEED

Peak hand speed is the fastest hand speed reached throughout the swing and occurs prior to the moment of impact, very close to the commit time in the swing when the wrists unhinge. (MLB ideal range is 23-29 mph).

1 Dalton Reinhart OF Cedar Crest (PA) 2021
23.8 mph
2 Charley Magoulick 1B DeMatha Catholic 2024 23.3 mph
3 Joseph Sweeney C Brunswick 2022 22.7 mph
