Using sensor technology that fits on the knob of a bat, without impeding the player, Blast Motion collected data to analyze every hitter’s swing at this year's PBR Maryland Western Trials. During batting practice, the Blast Motion sensors measured Swing and Impact Metrics across several categories. Swing metrics measure pre-impact mechanics centered around plane, connection, and rotation while Impact metrics measure pre-impact performance outcomes based on ball contact. Below are the top performers in five of the categories measured using the Blast Motion sensors.

BLAST SWING METRICS

ON PLANE EFFICIENCY

On plane efficiency measures the percentage of your swing where the bat is on the swing plane. (MLB average is 73%).

1 Matthew Roche 3B/1B Churchill 2022 82%
2 Daniel Burns C/OF Gerstell Academy 2022 79%
3 Jay Parente LHP/OF Thomas Johnson 2022 77%
4 Owen Liberto SS/2B Calvert Hall 2021 76%
5 Nathan Gumagay SS/OF Churchill 2022 74%
6 Dalton Williams OF/RHP Catoctin 2022
74%
7 Robbie Coates OF/RHP McLean (VA) 2022
72%

ROTATIONAL ACCELERATION

Rotational acceleration is how quickly your bat accelerates into the swing plane and is measured in G's (g-force). (MLB average is 16.8 G's).

1 Andrew Wolf 2B/SS Northern York (PA) 2022 27.0 g
2 Mike Wineke 1B Calvert Hall 2021 22.2 g
3 Scott Wilson SS/RHP Frederick 2021 19.0 g

PEAK HAND SPEED

Peak hand speed is the fastest hand speed reached throughout the swing and occurs prior to the moment of impact, very close to the commit time in the swing when the wrists unhinge. (MLB ideal range is 23-29 mph).
