Maryland Western Trials: Catcher Analysis

30 players from across the Old Line State, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and New Jersey participated in this year's Maryland Western Trials at Mount St. Mary's University. Players were put through a pro-style workout in front of our PBR Maryland scouting staff with Trackman and Blast also on hand to record data. Below are evaluations on the five catchers from the event. 

 

CATCHERS

(Listed Alphabetically)

Luke Bookoff C / OF / Bullis, MD / 2024

Body: 5’10’’, 140 pounds. Athletic frame. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from a relaxed, open stance at the plate. Quick load, average stride and good hand separation. Stays behind the ball well and through it with head down on contact. Showed some lower half involvement and extension through contact with a strong two-handed finish. Generates quick bat speed through the zone with a slightly uphill path. Really nice middle of the field approach. 
Power: 84 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Occasional pop.
Arm: RH. C - 66 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a mid three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Pop times ranged 2.34-2.44. Squares shoulders and gains ground on throws to second base with clean exchanges. 
Run: 7.67 60-yard time.


Daniel Burns C / OF / Gerstell Academy, MD / 2022

Body: 5’7’’, 130 pounds. Athletic frame. 
Hit: Switch. Hits from a balanced, open stance from the right side. Short back load with a controlled, small stride and some hand separation. Short to the ball with quick hands and showed some bat speed through the zone. Slightly uphill swing path with extension through contact and a two-handed finish. Uses the whole field well showing a really nice middle of the field, gap-to-gap line drive approach during BP. Similar set-up and swing from the left side with a more of an uphill swing path. Tendency to work more middle to the pull side from the left side. 
Power: 84 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. 
Arm: RH. C - 73 mph. Throws with short arm action from a high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Pop times ranged 2.08-2.19. Replaces feet quick and square shoulders to second base on pops. Quick, clean transfers with a slight hesitation in throw. Throws were accurate and on a line to the bag at second. Quiet body receiving and sticks it well.
Run: 7.30 60-yard time.


Ben Flood C / 3B / Heights, MD / 2024

Body: 5’7’’, 177 pounds. Solid body type.
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, square stance at the plate. Smooth back load and short, controlled stride with some hand separation. Short to the ball and stays behind well with a more level swing path. Maintains good balance through the swing and showed extension past contact with a one-handed finish. Really nice gap-to-gap line drive approach during BP with some pop.  
Power: 82 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Showed some power to the gaps with more projected. 
Arm: RH. C - 64 mph. Throws with short arm action from a high three-quarter slot. 
Defense:  Pop times ranged 2.21-2.27. Quick footwork behind the plate and squares shoulders to target on throws to second base. Quick, clean transfers and accurate throws to the bag. 
Run: 8.70 60-yard time.


Evan Weaver C / RHP / Boonsboro , MD / 2022

Body: 5’10’’, 170 pounds. Strong, athletic body type.
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, open stance at the plate. Short, controlled back load and small stride. Stays short to the ball with quick hands and bat speed through the zone. Showed a more level swing path with some lower half involvement working gap-to-gap with pop. Get extension past contact with a strong one-handed finish. 
Power: 86 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Present strength in the swing and power to the pull side. 
Arm: RH. C - 73 mph. Throws with short arm action from a three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Pop times ranged 2.00-2.15. Really quick footwork behind the plate and quick, clean exchanges on throws to second base. Throws were accurate to the bag. Athletic receiving with a quiet body. 
Run: 7.47 60-yard time.


Sean Wright 3B / C / Pallotti, MD / 2021

Body: 6’2’’, 200 pounds. Strong, solid body type.
Hit: RHH. Hits from a crouched, square stance at the plate with a rock back load and average stride length. Short to the ball with an uphill swing path and swings with intent. Showed extension through contact and a two-handed finish. Strong lower half involvement and pull-side approach. 
Power: 89 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Present strength in the swing and power to the pull side. 
Arm: RH. INF - 76 mph. Throws with long arm action from a mid to high three-quarter slot from third base. C - 70 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a mid three quarter slot behind the plate. 
Defense: INF: Early set-up and fields the ball out in front of his body. Quick shuffle footwork, squaring shoulders to target and gains ground on throws across the diamond. Clean exchanges. C: Side-steps out of crouch and gains ground on throws to second base. Showed quick, clean transfers and accurate throws to the bag. Pop times ranged 2.12-2.25.
Run: 7.45 60-yard time.
