New Faces to the MD 2019 Rankings

Yesterday we updated the 2019 rankings in Maryland with 20 new faces to the ranks extending our list to the top 90 players in the state. Today we are going to take a closer look into a few of these new players.

As mentioned yesterday, three new faces entered the top ten in RHP Matthew Wyatt (Loyola Blakefield), OF Tyler DeMartino (Walt Whitman), and C Justin Looney (Mount St. Joseph). Wyatt came into his own this junior season as part of the rotation on the Loyola Blakefield pitching staff in their championship season. Wyatt went 2-2 in 34.2 IP. He has a youthful, lanky and projectable frame at 6-foot-3, 175-pounds with room to add on. He has a longer, free arm action throwing from a low three-quarter slot that creates nice two plane movement on his fastball. Wyatt pitches 84-86, and has been up to 87 with plenty more in the tank with his fast arm and light effort on the mound.

DeMartino has had a hot summer coming into his own at numerous tournaments with his power potential. He hits from a square, balance set up with free hands at the plate taking a direct path to the ball with uphill finish and the ability to drive the ball. He hits with some rhythm at the plate and shows upside. DeMartino can play both the outfield and fill at a corner infield spot as well.

Looney is a strong and athletic catching prospect out of Mount St. Joseph. Physically advanced, Looney hits from an athletic slightly open set up. When on time he makes some loud contact at the plate and shows his power potential. Still room for improvement makes for a interesting young catching prospect. A quick exchange from behind the dish and life on his throws. Runs well for a catcher.

In yesterday’s story we also talked about new guys Trendon Craig and Joey Davis.

Other new faces

Jack Johnson LHP Atholton
Rank: 24
Johnson is a projectable left-handed pitcher with a 6-foot-3 frame. Has been up to 83 mph and projection to throw harder.

Seif Ingram SS Avalon
Rank: 39
Ingram is a nice athletic middle infield prospect with room for growth. Moves well at the shortstop position with a quick and confident first step. Able to make throws from different angles and throws show some carry. Quick hands at the plate with a solid foundation that should continue to develop offensively.

Gavin Tippett SS/UT Chopticon
Rank: 41
Tippett is a very interesting athletic prospect down at Chopticon. Has an athletic projectable frame Shows bat speed at the plate and ability to handle multiple positions. Plays short well might be suited to move to the outfield down the road. Room for strength and shows a quick bat and barrel awareness.

John Torroella RHP Mount St. Joseph
Rank: 56
Torroella is a lanky and projectable right-handed pitcher who was one of the many talented pitching prospects that stood out at the Maryland Underclass Prospect Games. Torroella was up to 81 on the mound with a sound arm action that is quick through release. As he fills out his frame should throw harder down the road.
