North Harford Survives CM Wright in a Pitchers duel

By Ryan Hudspeth

North Harford beat CM Wright 1-0 in a Class 3A Quarterfinal match-up on Wednesday afternoon. The game was a pitcher’s duel between CM Wright junior Tyler Hickey and North Harford’s Colin Bowling.

The only run of the game was scored in the second inning, when Kyle Munson reached base on an infield single for North Harford. The C.M. Wright shortstop made a terrific diving stop in the hole but chose to still make a throw, airmailing the first basemen allowing Munson to reach second base. After another single, Scott Angstadt hit a SAC fly for what ended up being the game winning RBI. After North Harford scored, Bowling took control of the game.

Bowling showed composure and command of all his pitchers when he needed it the most. The southpaw worked backwards with plenty of hitters keeping them off balance and did not allow the C.M. Wright hitters to make solid contact all game. He had late movement on his fastball and showed strong command of his off speed, going to his curve ball when he needed outs. In his complete-game effort he scattered six hits while striking out six with three walks.

C.M Wright looked like they were going to create a threat in the fourth after a base hit by Hickey, but his courtesy runner was picked-off by North Harford’s catcher Luke Johnson ending the momentum. Centerfielder Andrew Schatz made a great play in deep center, falling into the outfield fence after making the catch and stopping a potential North Harford rally. Schatz showed great speed with the spectacular play plus three infield hits and a stolen base.

Hickey had an impressive performance on the mound as well for CM Wright, as the tall (6-foot-7) right-hander went six innings giving up five hits, one run, and struck out three. He threw from an over-the-top arm slot with good life on his fastball and showcased a sharp breaking ball.

Schatz was 3-for-4 for CM Wright. Johnson went 2-for-3 for North Harford and Angstadt was 1-for-1 with an RBI.

North Harford moves on to the 3A North Championship where they will host Westminster on Friday.  Game time is 4 pm.
