Underclass Trials: Catcher Analysis

The 2015 Prep Baseball Report Maryland Underclass Trials took place on Tuesday, August 11th at the Diamond Pros Facility in Glen Arm, MD. 25 prospects from Delaware and Maryland area in the 2017-2019 class put their ability on display in front of the PBR scouting staff and college coaches from around the area.

Over the course of the week we will be releasing the positional analysis articles with scouting reports on each player and identifying the top performers. We shall identify top performers along with a younger talent (2018, 2019) as a Future Watch if applicable. 

Today we look at the Catchers that participated in the event. Let???s take a look at the participants.

TOP PERFORMERS

Tyler Shockley C/RHP James M Bennett 2018
compact frame at 5-foot-8, 140-pounds. Hits from an athletic, open stance with quick load to balance. Shows nice balance throughout his swing. Short path to the ball with quick bat speed. Gets some extension through contact. Good balance throughout his swing. Exit velocity of 83 mph. Quiet receiver behind the plate with soft hands. Good body control and athleticism. Quick feet with a clean exchange.  Short arm action throwing from a high ¾ arm angle. Falls slightly to the side on throws. Throws had some carry on them at 73 mph. Pop time got down to 2.03.

Jared Hancock (pictured) C/SS Pokomoke 2018
Athletic frame at 5-foot11, 150-pounds. Hits from a balance set up. Has a smooth load with a short stride to balance. Has a level bat path with quick bats speed and shows some extension through contact.  Get lower half involved and maintains good balance throughout his swing. Exit velocity of 84 mph. Displays body control behind the plate. Quick feet and quick clean exchange on throws down to second. Has a short arm action throwing from a high ¾ arm angle. Throws had some carry on them at 74 mph.  Pop times got as low as 1.97 and ranged up to 2.08. Ran a 7.60 6-yard dash.

FUTURE WATCH

Parker Landwehr C/1B Calvert Hall 2019
Athletic frame at 6-foot, 160-pounds. Hits from an open set up with light double tap load. High hands with some rhythm. Level path to the ball with some bat speed. Shows some extension through contact. Shows strength for young age. Good balance throughout swing with an exit velocity of 82 mph. Throws from a high ¾ arm angle with a short and quick arm action at 73 mph. Sound footwork with nice hands.  Has nice set up behind the plate. Quiet receiver. Quick footwork and clean exchange. Could continue to work on quickening exchange and release to lower pop time. His short arm action got pop time down to a 2.13.  Catcher velocity was 70 mph.  Ran a 7.22 60-yard dash. 

Travis Rinker C/OF Georgetown Prep 2019
Athletic frame at 6-foot-1 170 pounds. Hits from a tall slightly open set up. Short load and stride to balance.  Short path to the ball with some extension through contact. Could get more lower half into swing. Shows balance throughout swing. Exit velocity of 82 mph. Athletic behind the plate. Quiet receiver with a quick exchange and footwork. Shows nice body control. Short arm action from a high ¾ arm angle. Velocity behind the plate of 71 mph. Pop time got as low as 2.09. Plays thru the ball well from the outfield. Clean exchange with a longer loose arm action at a high ¾ arm angle. Throws had some carry on them at 77 mph. Ran a 7.60 60-yard dash.

BEST OF THE REST (LISTED ALPHABETICALLY)

Cameron Blankenship C/OF North East 2018
Athletic and projectable frame at 6-foot-2, 165-pounds.  Hits from a crouched, slightly open stance.  Short stride to balance. Short path to the ball with average bat speed.  Gets some lower half usage.  Exit velocity of 77 mph.  Behind the plate shows quick feet with a quick and clean exchange behind the plate.  Get good direction with footwork. Has a short arm action throwing from an almost over-the-top angle.  Throws had average carry on them at 70 mph.  Pop times ranged from 2.02 to 2.10. Ran a 7.50 60-yard dash.

Justin Pelletreau C/1B Archbishop Spalding 2018
Solid frame at 6-foot-2 200-pounds. Hits from a slightly open set up with short load and quick stride. Level path to the ball with some bat speed. Shows rhythm in swing and uses lower half well. Extension through contact and an exit velocity of 82 mph. Sound hands and exchange at first base. Could get more active with feet and play thru ball more to increase velocity.  Throws from a low ¾ arm angle with quick arm action at 65 mph.  Quiet behind the plate. Clean exchange and release. Throws had average carry on them at 71 mph.  Pop time got as low as 2.35. Ran a 8.22 60-yard dash.

Ryan (RJ) Price C John Carroll 2018
Athletic frame at 6-foot 161-pounds. Hits from a stacked, open set up. Stride gets to balance with small load.  Nice balance throughout swing. Level bat path with some bat speed. Exit velocity at 83 mph. Quick exchange behind the plate. Slight pause in his short arm action throwing from a high ¾ arm angle. Pop times got as low as 2.13 with 72 mph velocity. As he makes exchange and release more fluid, time should get lower. Ran a 7.37 60 yard dash.

Will Spanoghe 3B/C St. Mary???s 2017
Athletic frame at 6-foot-1, 185-pounds. Hits from an athletic set up. Short load and stride to balance. Level bat path to the ball with average bat speed. Shows nice balance throughout swing. Exit velocity of 71 mph.  Quick exchange and short arm action throwing from a low ¾ arm angle. Catcher velocity of 71 mph and pop time best of 2.06. Sound hands and exchange from third base. Like to see feet more active but shows footwork. Gets rid of the ball from a low ¾ arm angle and throws had average carry at 74 mph. Ran a 7.81 60 yard dash.
