Over the next few weeks, leading up to the beginning of the 2025 MD High School season, our staff will be releasing our Preseason Power 25. This list will be comprised of public and private schools across the state that we feel have a strong chance of being successful in 2025.

#17 Walter Johnson Wildcats

"Coming off an impressive 16-4 record a year ago, coach Sutherland enters 2025 with high hopes for another successful season at the helm of the Wildcats. WJ graduated their best offensive producer in Vance Bonior and their most trusted arm in Jay Wandell last year, however, return a slew of impact players on both sides, motivated to make another deep run in 2025. It's tough to argue against the fact that the Wildcats possess the deepest and most talented arsenal of arms in the county, even with the departure of Wandell, led by the likes of two lefty specialists in Spencer Gilcrest and Nolan Ross. Look for seniors Andreas Johnson and Shaun Rudick to make that jump this spring and provide depth on the backend, with still younger talent vying for key innings as well. Offensively, I never count out a Coach Sutherland led offense, as WJ always seems to find ways to win, however, the question mark for this team will be the firepower they produce at the dish. Power numbers may take a dip, as Bonior graduates and standout sophomore Franklin Zerpa transfers out, therefore production will have to come elsewhere. The senior class is deep and highly talented, led by Connor McGee with depth provided by Brady Chan, Ethan Hsu, Ross and Rudick. I really like WJ entering 2025 with a chip on their shoulder and I look for it to be another successful spring as they navigate through the gauntlet that is Montgomery County."
