Opening day of the public school season in Maryland is underway, and I made the hike to Anne Arundel County to see a big-time rivalry between two of the counties' best, as #8 Severna Park hosted #18 Broadneck in a Friday evening top-25 matchup. The lead would change multiple times early throughout the game, but the Bruins would slowly pull away in the middle of this one. Severna Park attempted to mount a comeback in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as #18 Broadneck picked up an upset 8-5 win over the Falcons.
A mix of strong pitching matchups and explosive offenses highlighted this one as Broadneck sent their ace in Noah Forman to the mound to lock horns with uncommitted junior flamethrower Eric Benner. The Bruins would draw first blood as they stayed patient at the dish and forced a bases-loaded walk. They almost blew the game wide open in that same inning, but a fly out to the warning track would keep it within reach. Severna Park would tie the game at two behind a pair of runs drove in by freshman Charlie Delobe. Broadneck would break it open in the fourth though by putting up a four spot, to which the Falcons could never recover. Another pair of Falcon juniors in Reese Davis and Kyle Witte would show flashes on the mound, but ultimately the Falcons couldn't mount a comeback. Broadneck would tack on two more in the 7th to give them a comfortable lead, but Severna Park would respond with two of their own before junior Jack Miteff would come out of the bullpen and secure the final two outs, giving Broadneck an 8-5 win to kick off their 2025 campaign.

Noah Forman RHP / Broadneck, MD / 2025Forman would be named player of the game in this rivalry matchup as he showcased the explosiveness on both sides of the ball. The senior RHP/1B would start the game for Broadneck, tossing 100 pitches through 6.1 innings, allowing only three hits while striking out six. Forman had always possessed the stuff within the arsenal, but we had been waiting for the velocity to jump, which it finally did getting up to 85 multiple times while settling into the low-80s throughout the entire outing, even into the seventh and final inning. Works a mix of a fastball and slider, and possesses the confidence to throw both pitches in the zone in any count, allowing him to keep hitters off balance. The confidence and emotion on the mound is certainly one thing that catches your eye, especially with the adrenaline that a big game will give you. At the dish, Forman went 2 for 3 with a walk on the afternoon, including a big time solo homerun to dead centerfield in the third inning to ignite the Bruins dugout. The two-way actions continue to impress, as he will once again hold the "ace" role in the rotation while being a big time power bat in the cleanup spot.

Michael Swick OF / Broadneck, MD / 2025The Frostburg State commit has continued to catch our attention over the last couple years, and Friday afternoon was no different as Swick led this Bruins lineup to their upset win. After not getting too many pitches to work with during his first two at-bats, he laced a two-run double down the left field line (second swing in video) following two leadoff BBs in the 4th that led the Bruins offense to their four-spot in the inning. Swick would tack on yet another double, this one a laser on an 0-1 count to the opposite field (first swing). Strong line drives with the ability to spray to all fields has been the status quo for him while occasionally showing off the power with high-90 EVs. Will be a significant piece to this offense as he is a trendsetter out of the leadoff spot.

Eric Benner RHP / Severna Park, MD / 2026The uncommitted junior took the ball for the Falcons in their opening day tilt with cross-town rival Broadneck, and showcased some impressive actions at the dish. The right-hander went three innings, allowing two runs on three hits, striking out five batters. There was often times traffic on the basepaths, but Benner did a strong job at working around it and limiting the damage throughout his outing. Worked a scoreless first inning, but then was slightly scattered with command in the second, allowing three walks which led to a run. Came back out for his third and final inning, allowed a leadoff HR but then cruised through the next three hitters, striking out two of them. His day finished there as his pitch count was approaching 70 at this point and with the Falcons having such a deep staff, no need to extend anyone this early in the season. Benner showcased an impressive fastball/curveball mix, mixing up pitches often to keep hitters guessing. Fastball touched 90 in the first inning, but settled in throughout at 85-88. Continues to showcase increased feel for the curveball with every look we are able to get which allows him to freeze up hitters with a more 12/6 shape. Even with all the junior arm talent the Falcons possess, Benner looks to be the one that'll develop into the "true ace". |

Charlie Delobe SS / Severna Park, MD / 2028One of the greatest advantages of scouting high school baseball is finding that athlete who jumps onto your radar after having the opportunity to take some looks for the first time, and Delobe fits that agenda. This was my first personal look at the talented two-way freshman, and the hit tool definitely opened my eyes. Finished with two hits on the day to lead the Falcons offense out of the nine hole, including the big time single in the third inning to drive in a pair and tie up the game. Added another knock in the 7th inning with a single up the middle that hit the second base bag and ricocheted into left-center field. Showed maturity in the box only as a freshman, and showed strong actions when putting the barrel to the ball, spraying a couple line drives gap-to-gap. This is definitely a 2028 that I will be keeping my eyes on as we progress through the spring season as he may very well turn into one of the next best underclassman across the county. |

Kyle Witte RHP / Severna Park, MD / 2026Witte was the third and final junior Falcon arm to take the hill in Friday's matchup, but may have had the most eye-opening outing of the three. At a projectable 6'3" frame, Witte possesses feel for the two-pitch mix as he pounded the zone early and often as soon as he came out of the bullpen. The junior tossed 3 innings, allowing two runs on only one hit, striking out three batters. The velocity continues to jump, with the fastball getting up to 86 while primarily sitting in the mid-80s (83-84). I have continued to like the secondary arsenal, showing present feel for the low-70s curveball in the zone. Witte may not be a high strikeout arm, but his mix limits hard contact and limits baserunners from getting on. Expect Witte to jump onto the scene this spring as another top arm in the county. |

Reese Davis RHP / Severna Park, MD / 2026The Falcons continue to breed next-level arms and Reese Davis definitely deserves to be on that list. Davis jumped massively onto our radar at our Maryland Preseason All-State event last month, and I had the chance to see him in action early into the 2025 season. Came out of the bullpen on Friday, and although didn't have his best stuff from a control and command standpoint, he showed off the capability for an impressive arsenal. Struggled to land the fastball early in counts which led to a couple early walks in the inning. The fastball fluctuated as he added and substracted to land it in the zone, but mostly worked into the mid-80s, grabbing the occasional 86 and 87. Showed off a low-70s breaking ball that plays like a slurve, had good shape and worked it below the zone, but hitters weren't as eager to chase the offspeed pitch on this afternoon. With it being early in the season, expect the control to improve as he settles into the spring and allows his arsenal to be showcased on a much higher level. |
