Montgomery County showcases some of the top baseball in the state, and Monday proved just that once again as Churchill made the trip to Sherwood for an early week matchup. A pitcher’s duel was on deck, as the Bulldogs handed the ball to their ace in Marymount commit Owen Singer, while the Warriors went with highly talented senior and McDaniel commit Jason Seils. Sherwood would threaten in the bottom of the 1st, as back to back hits by Sacred Heart commit Ryan Rey and Francis Marion commit Ty Hames put runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out. Singer would work out unscathed however, inducing a line out to 1st and a strike out to end the inning. Sherwood would cash in in the 2nd, courtesy of a two-out RBI single off the bat of junior Calum Jagannathan. The score would remain until the 4th, as Sherwood would strike once again, as junior Jacob Bender provided an RBI single up the middle to extend the Sherwood lead to 2-0. That’s all the run support this Warrior staff would need, as Seils would work 5.2 IP, giving up just four hits while striking out three before handing the ball to senior Shepherd commit Bryce Sheahin who worked 1.1 IP, striking out three.

Churchill

Owen Singer LHP / Winston Churchill, MD / 2025

The Marymount commit battled all day long and realistically kept this high-powered Sherwood lineup at bay through his five innings of work, striking out five while giving up just one earned run. It’s a three-pitch mix with the ability to throw all three for strikes and keep hitters off balance while mixing in any count. The fastball worked in the low 80s with more in the tank as the frame matures, mixing in a shorter shaped breaking ball with the ability to work it inside the right-handed hitters. The changeup in my eyes is the difference maker and when it’s on, it’s one of the top pitches in the state, showcasing dive action at the bottom of the zone that tunnels well off the fastball.

Sherwood

Jason Seils RHP / 2B / Sherwood High, MD / 2025

Got the start for Sherwood in their opening game this week and certainly impressed. It’s a long, lean 6-foot-2, 175-pound frame with plenty of room to fill out and add mass. Working with controlled intent, Seils showcases some deception in the low three-quarter release with hard arm side run on the mid to upper 80s fastball. The heater got up to 87 mph and should see more of a velo tick this spring as the warmer weather kicks in. The ability to dot the fastball to both sides of the plate impressed me, and the late life bodes well for consistent future success. The slider worked 71-74 mph and was effective in any count, keeping Churchill batters off balance with the ability to induce swing and miss away to RHH’s.

Ty Hames SS / 3B / Sherwood, MD / 2025

The Francis Marion commit transfers in from Goretti for his senior season and brings thump to the middle of the Sherwood lineup. A physical infielder, Hames showcases the ability to backspin to both gaps with a keen ability to produce loud contact consistently. In his first AB of the day, Hames stayed on a low off-speed pitch and rifled a bullet backside that burned the right-fielder for a double. It’s an aggressive, controlled operation with plenty of power ceiling

Calum Jagannathan C / SS / MD, Sherwood High School, MD / 2026

The uncommitted junior adds depth to this Sherwood lineup and produced on Monday, providing one of the two RBI singles on the day. A balanced, slightly crouched setup, Jagannathan showcases the ability to spray line drives to the middle with the ability to utilize the whole field effectively. As the frame fills out and strength is added, look for this to be a big bat for the Warriors and allow this lineup to turn over consistently.

Jacob Bender SS / 3B / Sherwood, MD / 2026

Yet another junior depth piece in this lineup, Bender utilizes rhythm in the hands and a controlled line drive approach at the dish that produced a key RBI single in the 4th inning to extend the Sherwood lead on Monday. Simple, consistent actions in the hands allow this hit tool to stay consistent with the ability to spray line drives gap-to-gap. Still room to add to the frame, look for power numbers to slowly tick up as the body matures.

Bryce Sheahin / Sherwood, MD / 2025

One of my favorite arms thus far this spring, the Shepherd commit came out of the bullpen and slammed the door, working 1.1 IP with three K’s. The moxie and confidence stood out to me and the ability to attack the zone consistently impressed. It’s a shorter arm action delivery with pace with the ability to  spin the breaking ball in any count for strikes. The fastball worked in the mid 80s to both sides of the plate with occasional run and late life, working well off the tight breaking ball for swing and miss in the zone. One of the top competitors in the state, Sherwood has the luxury of relying on Sheahin to be a shutdown closer out of the bullpen all spring long.
