2022 MHSAA Tournament: Division 1 State Semifinal - Orchard Lake St. Mary's vs Forest Hills Northern

EAST LANSING - Brock Porter threw a no-hitter in his final high school game on the mound leading Orchard Lake St. Mary’s to a 9-0 whitewash of Forest Hills Northern on Friday in the Division 1 state semifinals.

The Clemson commit, expected to be a first-round draft pick in the upcoming MLB Draft, retired the final 11 batters he faced in a near-perfect game.

“I just came out here and tried to give it all for my team,” Porter said after his no-hit performance. “Everything was working for me today. I tried to just get ahead with the fastball. They were rolling over a lot at the beginning so I just tried to get ahead and stay ahead the whole entire time with the fastball and just work in the offspeed.

“I like the atmosphere and playing against the best competition I can … I just like going out there and competing,” Porter added. “I have the best defense in the state. They’re the best teammates in the world. I know they always have my back out there.”

The Eaglets, now 43-0 on the season, scored two runs in the first on singles by Jack Crighton and Nolan Schubart, a double steal with Crighton stealing home, and an Ike Irish RBI single. Orchard Lake added one in the second on a Crighton double to plate Jasen Oliver who walked and stole second.

The top-ranked team in the state then put the game away in the fourth highlighted by a two-out Schubart grand slam following a walk to Ryan McKay, an Oliver double and a walk to Kyle Crockett. Dresselhouse singled, stole two bases and came home on a throwing error for the final run of the game.

The lone batters to reach base in the game for Forest Hills Northern were Jack Snow on a second-inning walk and Jonah St. Antoine on a fourth-inning base on balls.

HOT TAKES

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Six strikeouts and two walks were part of the pitching line for Porter, whose no-hitter helped last year’s Division 2 state champions reach the D-1 finals in 2022. Porter, the top-ranked player in the state, got stronger as the game went on, fanning five over the final three innings, the last being pinch hitter Sam Schroeder on a 3-2 high fastball for the second out of the seventh. Porter then retired Snow on a line out to Dresselhouse in center field for the final out.

BIG MOMENT: A play on a foul ball off the bat of Schubart was unable to be made in the fourth inning with the bases full and two outs and the senior committed to Michigan promptly unloaded on a blast to right field clearing the bases for a grand slam and suddenly a 3-0 lead was 7-0 and the game was in hand.
