2022 MHSAA Tournament: Division 3 State Semifinal - Buchanan vs Standish-Sterling

EAST LANSING - Buchanan rallied to tie the game in the top of the seventh and then scored five in the eighth to beat Standish-Sterling 6-1 in the Division 3 state semifinals on Friday evening.

The second-rated Bucks will face Detroit Edison in the 5 p.m. championship game on Saturday. Buchanan lost to eventual state champ University Liggett 2-0 in the 2021 semifinals.

Buchanan avoided a second consecutive loss in the state semis when Murphy Wegmer scored on a fielder’s choice ground out by Nick Finn in the seventh after Macoy West moved Wegmer to third with a double.

The Bucks, which had scored 64 runs in six tournament games prior to state, then put a five-spot on the board in the eighth on hits by Cade Preissing, Matthew Hoover, West, Finn and Hunter Carrington along with a Standish-Sterling error.

Standish-Sterling broke a scoreless contest with a run in the bottom of the sixth off of Hoover, who came on in relief of Drew Glavin. A one-out single to center by Cole Prout, a single by Bre Bartlett and an RBI single from Chase Raymond put the fifth-ranked team in the state on top 1-0 before Buchanan rallied in the seventh.

Glavin, the starting pitcher, came back in to pitch the eighth and finished with six innings on the mound allowing no runs on five hits and one walk.

HOT TAKES

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Macoy West came up big when the game was on the line. Down 1-0, West hit a double to left field after Wegmer opened the seventh with a single for Buchanan. Wegmer eventually scored the tying run to send the game into extras. In the eighth, a single by Preissing, a stolen base and a Hoover single put the Bucks up 2-1. After a fielding error, West belted a triple to center to drive in a pair and scored a batter later on a base hit from Finn.

BIG MOMENT: Standish-Sterling, in the state semifinals for the first time since 1976, took the lead 1-0 in the sixth but it could have been more. Singles by Cole Prout, Bartlett and Raymond plated the first run of the game but on the RBI hit by Raymond which scored Prout with his 84th run of the season to tie a MHSAA record, Raymond was thrown out at second by Wegmer, the Buchanan catcher, for the second out of the inning with Bartlett now at third. A ground out ended the uprising keeping Buchanan within one.
