Division 2 Team Of The Week: Week 3 - New Boston Huron

NEW BOSTON - If two standout pitchers is not enough, New Boston Huron head coach Phil Yancey has found a “diamond in the rough” in sophomore Micah Smith.

It has the head coach excited as ever about a season that has started out with the Chiefs being named the Prep Baseball Report Division 2 Team of the Week after a 5-1 beginning to the campaign.

“I think this team is better than last year,” related Yancey, who a year ago led New Boston Huron to the state semifinals before losing to eventual state champion Orchard Lake St. Marys. “We’ve been in situations already where we’ve been behind and we’ve been able to come back to win like we did last year. I think our pitching has gotten stronger and the hitting is the same. We had some good leadership last year but I think our leadership this year is starting to pick up a little bit.”

A 6-1 and 9-5 sweep of Bedford and 11-7 and 7-2 wins over Lincoln Park are sandwiched around a 5-0 blanking of Riverview and a 6-2 loss to Grosse Ile in 40-mile-an-hour winds.

“We had an error on the first pitch and it snowballed from there,” Yancey said about a walk, hit-by-pitch and single that followed during a four-run first inning in the lone loss of the year.

A bright spot in the defeat was Smith coming in and touching 90 on the mound after starter Luke Coll hit 90 three times in his time pitching.

Gavin Moczydlowsky threw a shutout against Riverview and will pitch on Thursday against Airport while Cole Grunwald, who threw a perfect game in regionals last year, tossed a two-hitter at Lincoln Park on Saturday.

“Our pitching has been good outside of against a couple hitters in the Grosse Ile game,” noted Yancey, who has high regard as well for sophomore Chad Martin.

The hitting and base running has stood out for New Boston Huron so far, with six batters hitting .300 or better and the team combining for 28 stolen bases in six games.

Grunwald, the team’s shortstop when not pitching, has been a leader at the plate along with Moczydlowsky, Jayden Morse, Matt Williams and Connor Grant, with Ashton Warren going 3-5 in his first start of the season on Saturday. Williams had perhaps the biggest hit of the season, a two-run home run in the sixth inning against Lincoln Park with the Bobcats trailing 6-5.

Williams has also been one of the leaders on the base paths along with Issac Smith and Morse for a team that is finding out what it is like to have a target on its back.

“We’re seeing a lot of teams one and two pitching against us,” noted Yancey. “Bedford had a league game on Monday but threw their top pitchers against us on Saturday. Our guys are responding to it, though.”
