Division 4 Team Of The Week: Week 6 - Beal City

MOUNT PLEASANT - Brad Antcliff is back in charge of the baseball program after a stint as the softball head coach and the long-time mentor has Beal City on a roll with eight straight wins.

“Our outlook will never change, our goal is to play the last game of the year in East Lansing,” pointed out the head coach of the Prep Baseball Report Division 4 Team of the Week.

Big wins over D-3 17th-ranked Pewamo Westphalia, 7-4, and D-4 third-rated Decatur, 10-3, completed an impressive week of action that included 16-0 and 19-0 victories over McBain and 16-7 and 5-2 triumphs over Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart, moving the Aggies to 14-4 on the campaign.

“What has stood out the most for the coaches is how fast that these guys have gotten used to a new style and how hard they work everyday,” pointed out Antcliff.

Josh Wilson was the winning pitcher against McBain and Pewamo Westphalia, allowing just five hits combined for Beal City, which a year ago advanced to the Division 4 state championship game before losing to Riverview Gabriel Richard, 4-3.

A pair of other juniors, Jack Fussman and Cayden Smith, have led the way at the plate with Fussman averaging .438 and Smith .433. Smith, the winning pitcher in the state semifinals last year who also pitched in relief in the finals, is a Kent State commit ranked seventh in Michigan among 2024 shortstops.

“The biggest surprise is how quickly the guys have adjusted to a new style of play,” Antcliff reiterated. “To continue to do well and have success the guys need to keep working on the little things.”

Now 8-0 in the Highland Conference, the second-rated team in the state in Division 4 will face Houghton Lake on Tuesday and Lake City on Friday before finishing up the week with a doubleheader against Big Rapids on Saturday.
