Dream To Play At Western Michigan Attained By Williams

CHEBOYGAN - “I’ve always had the mindset of going to Western.”

Mission accomplished for Caleb Williams, whose older sister and brother attended the Mid-American Conference school.

“It all started when I was younger,” explained the recent Cheboygan graduate, who committed to Western Michigan after considering Aquinas, Western Illinois, Adrian, Albion and Kalamazoo. “My sister had an athletic career at Western and I went to baseball and prospect camps there through the years.

“When I finally moved to Arsenal, I played in a tournament there and got a text from coach Pete (Adam Piotrowicz). Eventually they asked for me to come on a visit. I was super excited. I brought it up to my parents and sister and we all thought it was the perfect fit for me.”

His sister, Aspen, was an All-MAC softball at Western while his brother, Cole, attended the university to become a pilot.

“I like the idea of being the youngest kid and a chance to go where my brother and sister both went,” Williams noted. “As a competitor, I want to be better than the two older ones,”

Adding to the family history, his father Joseph played baseball in Germany.

“Since Little League my dream has been to play in the pros, but you’ve got to work your steps up,” Williams said. “My parents were always big into sports and that helped influence me.”

When college interest developed, Williams was on his way.

“When you get a text from a coach that changes a kids’ perspective,” Williams explained. “After that I felt I could go to college and play. It makes you want to work even harder to go where you want to go.”

A change in travel teams helped the cause according to Williams.

“Moving to Arsenal with Eddie Dewalt changed my baseball mentality and my skill set,” Williams said. “Playing with so many good players there versus up here made a big difference.”

A strong performance at the Michigan Top Prospect Games in June led up to the commitment.

“That was big,” related the 23rd-rated 2021 right-handed pitcher in the state. “I definitely feel I showed off my skills to a high capability. I’m not sure if they were there watching, but a week or two after that they sent me a text to come and play.”

The 6-2 198-pounder brings a lot of versatility on the field.

“They talked a lot about how I can play anywhere on the diamond,” Williams said. “I recently moved mostly to pitcher, but the fact I can catch and play shortstop was also a factor.”

The 18-year-old looks forward to showing what he can do at the MAC school, located four hours from his Cheboygan home.

“Hopefully, I’ll bring somebody who is able to play multiple positions and to be able to relieve,” Williams said. “There’s always some stress for schools to recruit at all the positions, so maybe I can alleviate some of that.”

Speaking of stress, Williams admits that it existed during the recruiting process.

“It was definitely stressful,” Williams related. “When you know what coach is there you start thinking about things and the worse you get. I struggled with that.

“But the good part about it was when you would get a text or email from a coach. There’s no better feeling than knowing they’re interested in you. It’s definitely a confidence booster.”

Geology is the planned major for Williams, a 3.0 student happy to have his future destination finally determined.

“It’s a very, very big relief,” Williams admitted. “Now I don’t have to worry about being recruited and can just play baseball. It was starting to get scary. I know my sister and father were as happy as I was. They definitely were a big factor in my success and we were all wondering if it was ever going to happen.”

With the goal of going to Western accomplished, Williams moves on to other aspirations.

“I want to do as much for them as they’ll let me,” Williams said. “Hopefully, I’ll leave a legacy like my sister did.”
