2023 Spring Team Preview: Grand Rapids Christian

GRAND RAPIDS - With six of the top seven hitters in the batting order returning along with the one-two pitching punch of Kyle Remington and Cam Seth, Grand Rapids Christian is one of the teams to beat this season after falling in the Division 2 state finals a year ago.

“This year’s team has experience playing in big games,” noted head coach Brent Gates, who has led the Eagles to a pair of state titles, two second-place finishes, six regional championships and six district titles. “The work ethic and leadership this group shows is off the charts. We feel we have unfinished business this year and that is the motivation driving this group.”

Remington, a University of Minnesota commit rated eighth in the 2023 Michigan class, threw a five-hitter in a 9-1 victory over Grosse Ile in the state semifinal contest last year. The right-hander was 5-3 on the season with a 1.37 ERA, fanning 77 in 56 innings.

Seth, who rotates with Remington at shortstop when not pitching, tossed a complete game in the 3-0 state final loss to Forest Hills Eastern. The senior was 5-1 with a 1.37 ERA in 2022, striking out 37 in 35.2 frames.

“Pitching will lead the way for this year,” explained Gates, who enters his 11th season at the helm with a 262-84 career record.

But the offense will be strong as well with only two-hole hitter Nathan Hedlund lost to graduation out of the first seven in the lineup.

“Experience is the strength of this team with seven returning starters,” pointed out Gates.

Remington, the leadoff hitter in 2022, batted .432 with 42 runs scored with three-hole batter Ty Uchman at .400 with 28 runs batted in. The left-hander who plays first base and also adds pitching depth to the Eagles, is a George Mason commit rated 48th in the 2023 Michigan class.

Left fielder Jackson Isaacs hit fourth last year and led Grand  Rapids Christian with a .450 average, 40 RBIs and six home runs. The Western Michigan commit is the fourth-rated 2024 outfielder in the state.

Josh Winkle, a right-handed hitting southpaw who can also pitch, returns in center field for his final season with the Eagles after hitting .356 a year ago while second baseman Cannon Paul is back to play second base following a .398 season as a sophomore. Seth was seventh in the batting order and carried a .347 average a year ago.

Also back from the 27-9 team in 2022 is senior catcher Luke Gelderloos.

“The expectations are the same every year and that is to win the last game of the year,” concluded Gates, who led Grand Rapids Christian to three consecutive state finals from 2011-13, winning in 2012 and 2013.
