Michigan Weekly Blog: What Should A Baseball Player Be Doing During Summer Season?

Summer Travel season is now in session and rocking.

Baseball showcases are also a big thing at this time of the year.

So, you’re playing baseball and going to showcases, right?

Does that mean you shouldn’t be doing some sort of sports performance training during the summer?

Absolutely not! Summer is actually the perfect time of the year to begin your training regimen.

Most travel schedules are a Friday through Sunday schedule and you’ll have some showcases in between those days.

What are you doing on Monday through Thursday?

What you should be doing is some sort of performance program that will develop your strength, power and athleticism.

The high school baseball season is a long season with it being from early March to early June. 4 months of baseball and very limited in-season strength and power development.

Playing baseball for the majority of the year isn’t a bad thing but if you’re not training your body the correct way and not taking care of muscular imbalances that may have popped up during your season then you’re setting yourself up for failure and potential injury.

We use the weight room to develop strength but we are more concerned about preventing injury then anything when it comes to our programming at Xplosive Performance Academy.

I understand having a busy summer with showcase and travel ball schedule but there needs to be a priority placed on doing some type of performance training on the days that you aren’t playing games. You need the training program to prevent injury while playing a game that uses some of the most violent movements in all of sports.

We have had the opportunity to work with many baseball players over the years and have had very few, if any, shoulder or elbow injuries. We have pitchers that throw in the low to mid-90s that have had no issue. I think that says something special about the emphasis we put on our baseball players during the off-season, including travel and fall ball seasons.
