PBR Michigan Spotlight Game: Sparta vs Allendale

Sparta - Tuesday’s match-up between Sparta and Allendale was expected to be a pitcher’s duel as 2017 RHP Bryce Davis (Sparta) and 2018 SS/RHP Tanner Morren (Allendale) faced off, with Sparta coming out on top by a 2-1 score.

Allendale jumped all over Davis in the first inning to get their lone run as OF Josh Hinken led the game off with a single up the middle, before moving to second base on a sacrifice bunt 2016 SS Jay Brandt. After a groundout, Morren was able to drive in Hinken on a two-out double to deep centerfield.

Sparta was able to get the bases loaded in the home half of the first inning after a hit by pitch, two fielder’s choices then straight walks, but could not plate any runs as Morren was able to get 2017 SS Colton Vanderleest to fly out to centerfield.

Davis came back to strike out the side in the second inning before Morren was able to retire the side in order in the home half of the second inning, striking out two of the hitters he faced.

After a runner was caught stealing to end Allendale’s threat in the third inning, Sparta was able to plate a run in the home half of the third inning as 2016 C Jordan Ball led off the inning with a single, before coming home two batters later on a fielder’s choice as David Yeck was credited with the run batted in after beating out a ground ball.

Allendale threatened again in the fourth inning as they got a one out triple from 2018 OF Michael Conflitti, but could not score him as Davis struck out the next two batters to keep the score tied up at one.

Sparta loaded the bases again in the home half of the fourth inning but could not score as they flew out to left with one out and Hinken was able to throw out the potential go-ahead run at the plate to end the inning.

After Davis worked another 1-2-3 inning in the fifth, Sparta was able to get their go-ahead run in the bottom half as Brennan Maslowski led off the inning with a double and moved to third base on a Yeck single.

After Morren got his counterpart Davis to fly out for the first out, Zach Wiseman was able to drive in Sparta’s second and final run of the game on a fielder’s choice.

Allendale was able to get back-to-back singles from catcher Caleb Thurkettle and Morren in the sixth inning, but Davis was able to strikeout the side in the sixth without giving up a run and stuck out all three hitters he faced in the seventh and final frame.

Both starters went the distance as Davis racked up thirteen strikeouts while Morren had three.
