Portage Central Handles Sturgis with Ease

By Ryan McCosky

Portage Central downed visiting Sturgis 10-0 on Friday night.  Today’s highlight was the pitching performance of young Portage Central’s Luke Schaeffer.  The sophomore right hander threw six innings allowing no hits, two walks, one hit batter and four strikouts.  Schaeffer’s fastball was 78-80 mph for most of the day.  His slider was harder at 73 mph as he got better as the game went on.

The play of the game came in the top of the 5th inning when Sturgis RF Jack Caywood looked like he had singled to shallow right but the Portage Central RF Losey came up and threw a strike to 1B to get the 9-3 put out.

Offensively for Portage Central center-fielder Chase Richards (2013) reached base three times and showed is speed with a beautiful push bunt base hit in which he reached second after a throwing error.   Portage Central first basemen Jordan Muffley also contributed with two doubles completing a multi-hit and multi-RBI day for the young sophomore.
