2023 Spring Team Preview: Rochester Adams

ROCHESTER HILLS - With an outfield featuring an Alabama commit, a Notre Dame signee and a returning all-league senior, Rochester Adams has a lot to build around in the upcoming campaign.

“We’ve got to win the close games,” head coach Jeff Hall said about keys to the 2023 season being a great one. “We’ve got to find ways to scratch a run or two across. I think we have the team to do it. We run the bases well. We just have to be able to claw to win those close games.”

With Parker Picot, the second-rated senior outfielder in the state, in center along with Brenson Watters, the eighth-ranked junior in Michigan, and Jake Sukkar in the corner outfield positions, the Highlanders appear primed to improve on a 33-7 year that featured league and district championships before losing in the regionals to Lake Orion.

“We do have some holes to fill after losing two of our top pitchers from last year,” pointed out Hall, who will have Picot back to anchor the staff after posting a 7-1 record a year ago. “It’s nice to have Parker back.”

Senior Tait Picot, Parker’s brother, also returns with more pitching coming from seniors Colton Jones and Will Churchill. Jones, is the 56th-rated 2023 right-handed pitcher in Michigan headed to Central Florida Junior College, while Churchill is a left-hander committed to Kellogg Community College.

Righty Nathan Bishop and southpaw Broder Kawa, a pair of seniors, add depth to a staff that has six sophomores that bring more potential on the mound in an attempt to replace the graduated trio of Joni Ursay, Jackson Borowski and Will Stice, who combined for around 100 innings on the hill in 2022.

Whoever is pitching will have the fortune of Brady Doelle behind the plate. The senior catcher is also headed to Kellogg.

The trio of Parker and Tait Picot along with Watters are expected to provide big sticks at the plate coming off impressive seasons a year ago. Parker, the 34th-rated senior outfielder in the nation who is headed to Alabama, hit .418 with a 1.33 OPS, 12 doubles, four triples, 10 home runs, 45 RBIs and 22 stolen bases last season.

Tait, an uncommitted senior ranked second among 2023 third basemen in the state, batted .360 with a 1.06 OPS, three home runs, 10 doubles, three triples and 42 RBIs. Watters, the Notre Dame recruit rated eighth in the country among 2024 first basemen, averaged .385 with 14 doubles, three home runs, 36 RBIs and 20 stolen bases.

Senior shortstop Buck Snabes is another returnee for Rochester Adams along with Sukkar in the outfield.

“They love baseball and they love to compete,” Hall said about what he likes with the 2023 Highlanders, which feature a couple freshmen and sophomores that could make a major impact according to the head coach. “Most of these guys are two-sport athletes which I think helps. They know how to deal with adversity.”

But there remains a concern on the mound according to Hall.

“I think we will hit it and pick it up, but we lost those guys pitching,” Hall noted. “We just have to have guys that haven’t thrown a ton of innings step up.”

The regular season begins on March 31 for the Highlanders, with Hall pointing to “perennial powerhouse” Lake Orion as one of the teams to beat in the Oakland Activities Association Red Division this year, which has added West Bloomfield for the 2023 campaign.

Hall, who has been the head coach at Rochester Adams since 2011, is pleased with what he has brought to the program heading into the promising season ahead.

“We have players that show up every day and compete,” Hall said. “We want to play good teams so we see good pitching which will help us in the tournament.”
