BELLEVILLE - The second-rated senior shortstop in the state of Michigan might also pitch in college.

That opportunity helped RJ Sherwood decide on Oakland as his future home with a recent commitment to the Horizon League school.

“They started talking to me in mid-July at a PBR showcase event,” the 6-4 165-pounder said. “They liked what they saw and continued talking to me.”

A visit soon followed for the Belleville High School senior.

“I loved the campus and the coaches were really nice,” the eighth-ranked 2019 player in Michigan noted. “I went to see a practice and met a bunch of the players. They said it’s a real family-oriented team. I’m familiar with the area, my mom got her Master’s there.”

And then Sherwood heard the words other Division I schools had not told him.

“They said I could be a two-way guy,” Sherwood explained. “That was another big plus.”

Oakland sees plenty of upside in Sherwood.

“They like my athleticism,” Sherwood pointed out. “They said I’m very projectable. With pitching I can develop into a very good pitcher, while being athletic I can play shortstop as well.”
