Top 5 Infield Performances at the Unsigned Senior Showcase

By Mike Penn
Michigan Scouting Director

The infielders at the Unsigned Senior Showcase overall were very good.  Johnny Nate (Stevensville Lakeshore HS), Kyle Riley (Bloomfield Hills Lahser HS) and Hunter Hayes (Adrian HS) led the way for the infield group.  Here were the top five infielders at the event.

Johnny Nate, SS/MIF, Stevensville Lakeshore HS- Nate was clearly the most impressive infielder there. His defense is where he shines the most.  He moved well and demonstrated good range.  His throws were accurate and his arm plays very well and he was 87mph across the diamond.  As a runner, Nate is solid checking in at 7.03 but certainly will break the 7.0 mark.  At the plate, he was athletic and balanced. He generated good bat speed by using an explosive lower half.  Nate is the best uncommitted infielder left in the state followed closely by summer teammate Brennan Kerr (Battle Creek Lakeview HS).

Kyle Riley, SS, Bloomfield Hills Lahser HS- Riley was a really nice surprise. Walking in the door, Riley looked the part and he did not disappoint.  We had heard good things about him in the past but he surpassed our expectations.  Riley stands at 6-foot-3, 175-pounds has a body to certainly add more weight and strength down the road.  He ran a showcase best 6.82 in the 60.  Across the infield he had good actions and arm strength that checked in at 82 mph.  At the plate he was athletic and balanced with a line drive stroke. Expect Riley to draw plenty of interest from DII, DIII, and NAIA schools.

Pat Gaudard, MIF, Gull Lake HS- Gaudard is a strong bodied 5-foot-9, 195 pound athlete.  He brings a toughness and gritty grinder mentality to the field.  In the infield he made all of the plays and his arm strength registered at 76mph across the diamond. He made clean transfers on all of his plays and through accurately across the diamond. His bat plays really well and he had a showcase best 87mph exit velocity. He gets the bat head through the zone quickly and put the barrel on the ball consistently creating good hard contact.

Travis Johnson, MIF, Hartland HS- Johnson had a good overall day at the Albion Unsigned Senior. He has good actions in the middle infield and profiles best as a second baseman at the next level.  He played through the ball well and made accurate throws to first base.  He was consistent all day and is a solid player all around. At the plate he closes himself off but he did had a shorter level stroke.  He ran a respectable 7.25 in the 60.

Hunter Hayes, 1B, Adrian HS- Hayes had one of the best performances at the Unsigned Senior. To start, he ran a 6.85 in the 60 which was much improved since his 7.1 back in the summer. He has added some strength as well. Defensively he picked everything that came his way.  He was smooth and showed soft hands coupled with good footwork around the bag.  At the plate he is raw still yet but has continued to show improvement with signs of putting it all together.  He starts from an upright stance and whips the barrel through the zone.  He currently has gap to gap power with the chance to hit for more power as he progresses.
