Trevino Sees A Big Future At Ball State

CLIO - Drew Trevino heard those magic words about his future when talking with Ball State.

“Their goal for me is to be drafted,” the Flushing High School junior related.

It helped the sixth-ranked 2022 right-handed pitcher in Michigan make a college decision.

“I think the first time they saw me throw was in June at a PBR showcase,” Trevino said in reference to the Michigan Top Prospect Games. “I had a call with them shortly after.”

The connection built from that point on.

“I was in Georgia when they offered me in July,” Trevino reflected. “We’ve been talking for three months. They see something special and feel I can pitch right away and impact winning.

“They like the way I throw and my body,” the 6-6 190-pounder said. “I’m tall and they say they can develop it easily and effectively. They also like my mechanics and my work ethic.”

A visit to Muncie, Ind., helped seal the deal.

“I toured virtually and then went with a friend, Jake Coulter (Kentucky commit from Brother Rice), and walked around campus,” Trevino said. “The field was awesome.”

There was more Trevino liked during phone conversations with the coaches from the Mid-American Conference school.

“They sold me when they said I’d be one of the top guys,” Trevino said about the 2022 recruiting class at Ball State. “They said they’d develop me into the best pitcher I can be and I could be drafted one day.”

An offer from Oakland, strong interest from Michigan State, Eastern Michigan and Xavier as well as emails with Tennessee and Duke were being considered by the 17th-rated junior in the state prior to making a commitment to play in the Hoosier state.

“I had a lot of options to eventually choose from and it was very difficult with Covid and all the deadlines, but I made it work,” Trevino said. “I did everything I could to go through the process correctly.”

Work never stopped during the process for Trevino, who pointed to leadership and the mental side of the game as far as “staying composed on the mound and not overthinking” as areas of improvement this year.

“I still want to put on more muscle and a little more weight,” Trevino added. “I also have some mechanical things to work on and I want to add more velo.”

The dream to play beyond high school began at an early age.

“Ever since I was little, since I was eight-years-old, I’ve wanted to play college baseball and get to the next level,” Trevino related.

It became more realistic freshman year.

“I pitched and I started getting awards, first-team all-conference and all-district,” Trevino said. “My only loss was in Super Regionals.”

The ability to succeed is a trait Trevino believes he can bring to Ball State.

“I definitely can improve the winning,” Trevino noted. “I’m a composed pitcher who’s mentally tough, does all the basics correctly and has a little bit of swagger to him. I can bring a little of that to Ball State.”

Help has come from a number of individuals during Trevino’s baseball journey.

“My father (Daniel) taught me everything from how to be mentally strong to mechanical things,” Trevino said. “He’d practice with me day and night.”

High school coaches Tim McDonald and Stephen Burdis were also influential in his pitching and mental development while Trevino credited travel coaches Mike Weatherly and Mitchell Bohn with playing major roles in a recruiting process that has come to an end.

“I was very ecstatic when I finally committed,” noted Trevino, who carries a 3.1 GPA and is pondering a major in business. “A lot of stress came off my shoulders and I could breathe again. But this only puts a chip on my shoulders. I’m definitely not going to stop working.”
