Unsigned Senior Games: White Team Analysis

By PBR Staff

The White team at the Unsigned Senior Games was loaded with good players who will play at the next level.  David Cole (Southfield HS) led the way offensively for the White team.  Cole picked up several hits including a triple and a double.  Additionally he swiped two bags.

Craig Bosanac (Monroe Jefferson HS), Tate Brawley (Niles HS), Jamie Castiglione (Fenton HS), Mitchell Ashcraft (Forest Hills Central HS) and Garret Bronkema (Edwardsburg HS) were all extremely impressive on the mound.  All of them were were in the low to mid 80's with their fastball with Bronkema being the hardest up to 87mph.

Here is a look at the breakdown:

James Bristol, RHP/OF, Calvin Christian HS, 2014

Bristol looks the part when he steps on the field.  Great looking frame and potential to gain plenty of strength.  Long levers on his 6-foot-2, 180-pound frame.  A good athlete he worked out in both the outfield and from the mound.  Best upside is on the mound. Fastball ranged between 79-82mph on this day, although reports are that he has been higher. Clean arm action. Has higher leg kick but maintains balance well.   Fastball was down in the zone. From the outfield he showed one of the better arms. 82mph.  Good carry with long arm action.  At the mound has tight hands to his body.  Should see more power as he better incorporates his lower half. Overall should see attention on the mound.

Garret Bronkema, RHP, Edwardsburg HS, 2014

Bronkema once again showed well.  Big strong RHP with live arm.  One of the best arms left in the Class of 2014. Drop and drive mechanics.  Gets good drive.  Fastball sat 85-87mph his entire outing.  Slider is short and later. 74-75mph.  Expect him to pick up attention quickly.

Michael Blake, OF/C, Univ of Detroit Jesuit, 2014

Blake is smaller and compact at 5-foot-8, 180-pounds.  Ran well with a 7.12 in the 60.  Short arm action from both the outfield and behind the plate.  Pop times around 2.3 seconds.  At the plate showed good balance.  Some pop with line drive approach.

Noah Beck, OF/INF, Stoney Creek HS, 2014

Athletic 5-foot-10, 165-pound outfielder.  Like him the best in the outfield.  Took good routes to the baseball. Has natural instincts.  Arm strength needs to improve (72 INF, 74 OF). Good runner 7.1 in the 60.  At the plate profiles as a contact hitter. Simple no-load mechanics.  Would like to see him incorporate lower half more.

Mitchell Ashcraft, RHP, Forest Hills Central HS, 2014

Ashcraft continues to make his jump.  Arm has always worked well.  It was a matter of time before the velocity started to come. Sat 82-85mph at Unsigned Senior Games.  Worked fast. Good tempo. Kept hitters off balance.  Threw breaking ball for a strike consistently. Pulled change from time to time.  Definite riser in the class.

Mitch Dykstra, OF/IN, Grandville HS, 2014

Dykstra performed well at the Unsigned Senior Games as well. In the showcase portion he ran a 7.38 and was 80+ from the outfield.  Has added versatility to play both the outfield and the infield.  Exchanges in the outfield were a bit long.  In the infield made all of the plays. Has good body control. Accurate.  Quick feet.  At the plate has oppo approach and picked up a triple in game action.

Jamie Castiglione, RHP, Fenton HS, 2014

Castiglione is one of the fastest risers in the Class of 2014. He has gone from under the radar to one firmly planted on the recruiting sceene.  Still a bit raw but has a true swing and miss breaking ball.  Velocity will climb for sure.  Good frame broad shoulders.  Fastball 82-85mph. Struck out four hitters in game action.

Danny Carrasco, 3B/C, Calvin Christian HS, 2014

Carrasco shows good promise.  Liked him the best at 3B.  Offensive approach has improved.  Small school kind of player. Good actions coupled with soft hands.  Sure solid defender at 3B.  At the plate offensively has improved a lot over the past year.  Shoots the right-center gap well.  Balanced with fast bat.  Can also play behind the plate if necessary.  2.16-2.28 pop times.

Corey Burdgick, C/OF, Hackett Catholic Central HS, 2014

Extremely athletic well put together athlete.  Has performed well several times for us.  Speed is perhaps biggest asset. 6.8 runner.  Behind the plate pop times ranged between 2.12-2.19.  Threw out a runer during the games.  Fast athletic bat. Sit and spin kind of hitter.  His speed opens up options for him in the outfield as well.

David Cole, OF/INF, Southfield HS, 2014

Cole was one of the biggest risers in the class.  Very athletic OF/INF with good versatility.  80+ arm from both OF and INF.  Throws had good carry to them.  Still a bit raw but has upside.  In game took good routes to ball.  Made best defensive play of Unsigned Senior Games with diving catch in center.  Offensively showed Good bat speed with some juice in the swing.  2-part action.  Got to extension well.  Multiple hit performance at the games.  Also swiped a few bags and took the extra base.

Andrew Sinelli, C, Dexter HS, 2013

Sinelli is a 6-foot, 185-pound catcher from Dexter HS. Has room for strength gains and maturity. Best is yet to come.  Solid arm behind the plate.  Blocked ball well and showed good hands receiving.  Pop times can improve with shorter arm action (2.13-2.25). At the plate picked up a single and a stolen base in game action.  Flat bat contact hitter.

Garrett Harris, INF, Thornapple Kellogg HS, 2014

Harris is a solid ball player all around.  Has been coached well.  Sound defensively. 80+ arm across the diamond. Sure hands and an accurate arm allow him to play all around the infield. Offensively shows good balance with gap power.  Extends his hands well. Good addition to any program.  Will add depth and versatility.

Tyler Gulick, INF/RHP, East Lansing HS, 2014

Solid all around player. Very physical. Put together well. Ran much better than expected (6.94). Made several nice plays defensively during the game.  Turned two up the middle and ranged into the hole to make another.  Balanced at the plate with slight open stance.  80+ across the diamond. Potential reliever and infielder for the right school.

Tate Brawley, RHP, Niles HS, 2014

First time we have seen Brawley. Long lanky frame 6-foot-4, 170-pounds. Should garner lots of attention. Velocity still to come as he gains strength. Fastball 81-83mph right now but reports have him higher than that.  Loved his demeanor on the mound. Pounded the strike zone with three pitches.  Loose arm from low ¾ slot.  Kept the ball down well. Workman like attitude. Extremely quick uptempo on the mound by only letting seven seconds between pitches.

Craig Bosanac, RHP/3B, Monroe Jefferson HS, 2014

Big bodied RHP/3B at 6-foot-2, 210-pounds.  Liked him the best on the mound. Fastball ranges between 82-85mph but has been in the upper 80’s. Sat primarily between 84-85mph.  Breaking ball is tight. Swing and miss pitch.  (72-75mph).  Heavy fastball that induced lots of ground balls.  In the field has long arm action and winds up to throw. Slinger from 3b.  Offensively has plenty of pop. 90mph exit velo.  Has a swagger to him in the box. Does get heavy on frontside.

Casey Bennett, C/OF, Jenison HS, 2014

Bennett has a good frame to work with. 6-foot-1, 170-pounds.  Has good levers to generate some pop. Does work uphill a bit. Picked up two hits in game action. Both basehits up the middle to right side.  Can also play in the outfield and occasionally pitch.  Smaller school kind of player.
