Winning Culture Takes Purify To Michigan

DETROIT - “Winning is everything. I hate to lose.”

Being part of a winning culture is important to Jarren Purify and watching Michigan reach the College World Series championship series in 2019 left the second-ranked 2023 player in the state wanting to be a part of that atmosphere.

Mission accomplished for the incoming-sophomore at University Liggett with a commitment to play for the Wolverines.

“Michigan is home,” explained the 12th-rated 2023 third baseman in the country. “They’ve been to Omaha and I watched them. It made me think about playing there. It’s only 30-45 minutes from home and my family can come watch.”

Interest between Purify and Michigan developed early this year.

“We started talking about six months ago,” Purify reflected. “We built a relationship along the way and about three weeks ago they offered and I decided to take it. I like how their coaches build relationships with their players. They seem really interested in me and that made me want to take the offer.

“They’ve been following me for two years when they watched me in the Little League World Series,” added Purify. “They said they wanted to come watch me this season and wanted me to come on a visit but then Corona happened.”

It did not slow down interest in the 14-year-old from Detroit, who was being recruited by Purdue, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Duke and Alabama State.

“I didn’t think about college baseball until my freshman year of school,” Purify related. “Everybody was talking to me about offers and schools and I wasn’t even sure I wanted to play in college. But about mid-winter I said to myself I’ve got to do this. I want to play college baseball.”

It brought on a change in the 5-10 160-pounder.

“I knew I needed to do more and I started practicing every day,” Purify said. “I started seeing improvement in my game and in the classroom.”

Exposure came at the PBR Preseason All-State event in early March.

“There was great competition,” the 166th-rated 2023 in the nation pointed out. “I had to step it up and do it.”

A 6.65 time in the 60, an exit velo of 85 and infield velocity of 80 had Purify making an impression.

But then COVID-19 put a hit on the baseball plans of Purify.

“There were a lot of things I couldn’t do,” Purify related. “It was crazy. But there was an indoor place my team had access to and we went there every day. I had to make sure I was solid. It showed who was practicing and who wasn’t. Fortunately, I was on top of everything.”

Purify pointed to his mother and coaches, in particular, with lending a helping hand.

“My mom and all my coaches along the way really helped me through this process,” Purify noted. “My mom has been great, she’s my biggest fan. My dad has also done a lot to help me be successful.”

Admittedly, recruitment was not easy.

“It was really stressful,” Purify said. “I was really nervous to commit. A week after committing I was worried about what everybody was saying. It was a rough week but now I’m back at it.”

And happy to be a future Wolverine.

“This means a lot to me,” Purify noted. “I can play for my state and for my family. I want to try and do my best to make them proud. I want to do it for them.”

With plans to be “used everywhere” at Michigan, Purify believes he can provide a lot to the table at the Ann Arbor school.

“I can bring enthusiasm and excitement to the team,” Purify said. “I’m a team player and will do anything to help the team win.”

That is a trait that Michigan saw in the University Liggett prospect.

“They like that I’m a winner and that I have a competitive mindset,” Purify said.

That is evident as he looks to the future following a commitment to the Big 10 power.

“Honestly, nothing has changed since I’ve committed,” pointed out Purify, who carries a 3.6 GPA and is planning on a major in engineering. “I’m still trying to get better. I can improve at everything.

“Everyone is congratulating me but it’s just one goal that I’ve achieved. Now it’s on to the next goal. I want to get drafted and make it to the major leagues.”
