6.4 Underclass Games at SLU: Catchers Analysis

On Tuesday, June 4, Prep Baseball Report-Missouri held the Underclass Prospect Game at Saint Louis University.  In the days to come we will break down each position.  Today, we will look closer at the catchers.

Justin Mitchell (Platte County, 2017)
Mitchell is a projectable, athletic 5-foot-11, 185-pound C/OF. He posted an event best POP of 1.93. He showed very quick feet and a position velo of 73 MPH. At the plate, Mitchell had a balanced setup with a smooth load and short stride. His lower half is explosive with good balance through his swing. Justin has good bat speed with gap-to-gap and pull power. His exit velo was an event best 90 MPH.

Trynton Tompklins (Greenville, 2016)
Tompkins is a 5-foot-10 195-pound catcher. He had a fluid exchange that produces pop times between 2.05-2.18. Tompkins has a 73 MPH position velo. At the plate, Trynton has an athletic setup with a smooth load and good balance through his swing. He is a gap-to-gap hitter with an exit velo of 89 MPH.

Weston Schad (Westminster,2017)
Schad is an athletic, projectable 6-foot, 190-pound right hand hitting catcher. He has great feet and side-to-side movements. Schad displayed a quick short arm action and a POP range of 2.12-2.26. He had a position velo of 70 MPH. At the plate, Schad has an open setup with a smooth load. He has a short stride with an explosive lower half. Weston keeps good balance through his swing with a level bat path. He displayed plus power with a gap-to-gap approach. His exit velo was one of the top at the event, 87 MPH.

The Best of the Rest (Listed Alphabetically) 

Will Biggs (Campbell, 2017) Biggs is a 5-foot-9, 145-pound catcher. He has good sided-to-side movements. Biggs had mostly accurate throws. His POP range was 2.40 - 2.53. At the plate, Biggs has a balanced setup with a smooth load. He gets some lower half in his swing and stays balanced. His exit velo was 66 MPH.

Caleb Carswell (Parkway West, 2017)
Carswell is a 6-foot, 190-pound right hand hitting catcher. He had a POP range of 2.50 - 2.69. His position velo was 67 MPH. At the plate, Caleb starts with an athletic approach with a smooth load. He uses his lower half well and has a line drive, gap-to gap approach. His exit velo was 73 MPH.

Coltyn Kessler (Rockwood Summit, 2017)
Kessler is a strong 6-foot-1, 190-pound C/3B. Behind the plate, Kessler had a POP range of 2.17-2.26. His position velo was 69 MPH and has quick feet. At the plate, Coltyn has a balanced setup with a smooth load. He takes a short stride with an explosive lower half. Kessler has definite power potential to all fields and an advance approach. His exit velo was 76 mph.

Luke Layton (MIDCS, 2017)
Layton is a 5-foot-8, 178-pound catcher. He displayed a POP range of 2.19-2.30. His position velo was 70 MPH. At the plate, Layton has a balanced setup with a smooth load. He takes a long stride and uses his lower half well. Luke has a level swing that produces line drives. His exit velo was 83 MPH.

Connor Morehouse (Park Hill, 2017)
Morehouse is a 5-foot-10, 190-pound catcher. He showed a POP time ranging from 2.19-2.41. He displayed good feet and stayed in line with his throws. At the plate, Morehouse has a balanced setup with a smooth load. He showed a long stride with good pop. There is some power potential with an exit velo of 81 MPH.

Tyler Pauley (Marquette, 2017)
Pauley is an athletic 6-foot 185 pound catcher. He has a clean exchange with fluid footwork and a POP range of 2.18 - 2.37. His position velo was 68 MPH. At the plate, Pauley starts with a balanced setup with a smooth load. He has a gap-to-gap approach with a short bath path. His exit velo was 77 MPH.

Nate Thompson (Park Hill, 2017)
Thompson is an athletic 5-foot-8, 170 pound right hand hitting catcher. He posted a POP range of 2.06 - 2.22. He has good side-to-side movements and solid footwork. Thompson has good carry on his throws and was mostly accurate. At the plate, he has a balanced setup with a smooth load. He's a line drive hitter with a balanced level swing. His exit velo was 76 MPH.

James River Wright (Bucklin, 2017)
Wright is a strong 5-foot-11, 170-pound left hand hitting catcher. His POP range was 2.09 - 2.20. He showed nice side-to-side movements. His position velo was 77 MPH. At the plate, Wright starts with a balanced setup and a smooth load. He takes a long stride and uses his lower half well. Wright has good bat speed and a level bat path. His exit velo was 78 MPH.
