Class of 2017 Games: Catcher Analysis

Prep Baseball Report-Missouri held the Class of 2017 Games at Saint Louis University on June 7.  The event featured nearly 50 players from across the Show-Me State in the 2017 class. 

Profiles have been updated with times, velos, profile pictures and videos.  We will break down the event positon-by-position, taking a look at the catcher's performances today.  Although some catchers may have worked out in other positions, this is just a look at their performance behind the plate.  Catchers are listed in alphabetical order.

Catchers

Jack Custer, Lafayette, 2017
Custer is a 6-foot 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher from Lafayette in the St. Louis area.  He ran a 7.47 60 and a 5.09 home-to-first.  He has an exit velo of 86 mph. At the plate, starts in a balanced set up, loads lower half into back leg, some hand movement, quick bat speed aggressive swing, swing produced pull side line drives, showed feel for the barrel in game action, collected three singles. Behind the plate, pop times between 2.03 and 2.18, 71 mph positional velo, over the top release, fluid exchange and quick release, mostly accurate throws. 

James Dotson, Liberty, 2017
Dotson is a 6-foot-1 190-pound right-handed hitting catcher from Liberty in the Kansas City area.  He ran a 7.62 60 and got down the line in 4.76 seconds.  He has an 85 mph exit velo. At the plate, Dotson used the middle of the field during batting practice, tall stance, minimal load in lower half, some hand load, level path to extension, singled up the middle in game action.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.01 and 2.12, 71 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, fluid catch and throw with fluid footwork, mostly accurate throws.

Nick Hagedorn, Smith Cotton, 2017
Hagedorn is a 5-foot-10 185-pound left-handed hitting catcher from Smith Cotton High School in Sedalia.  He posted one of the top left handed hitting exit velos of 91 mph, one of the top for the event. At the plate, starts with loaded stance, no wasted movement in hands, quick and aggressive swing, power to pull side, consistent hard contact to pull side during batting practice.  Behind the plate, pop times between 1.97 and 2.17, one of the top pop times for the event, 73 mph positional velo.  Behind the plate, quick catch and throw, feet work with hands, momentum through the catch, throws are mostly accurate to the bag with carry. 

Amos Healy, Staley, 2017
Healy is a 5-foot-11 215-pound right-handed hitting catcher from Staley HS in the Kansas City area.  He ran a 7.90 60 and a 5.26 home-to-first.  He has an exit velo of 88 mph, one of the top RHH velos for the event. At the plate, has a balanced set up, smooth load, in line stride, quick bat, power to pull side, pull approach, singled up the middle in game action.  Behind the plate, pop times between 1.98 and 2.21, one of the top pop times for the event, 75 mph positional velo, one of top velos for the event, momentum towards target, high three quarters release, quick transfer and jab step with back foot, mostly accurate throws. 

Coltyn Kessler, Rockwood Summit, 2017
Kessler is a 6-foot-3 195-pound left-handed hitting catcher from Rockwood Summit in the St. Louis area.  He ran a 7.28 60 and 4.84 home to first.  He has an exit velo of 89 mph, one of the top LHH velos for the event. At the plate, gap-to-gap power, short path to contact, no wasted movement in load, level and quick bat path, solid consistent contact during batting practice.  Behind the plate, pop times between 1.98 and 2.05, one of the top pop times for the event, 76 mph positional velo, one of the top velos for the event, aggressive and strong throws with carry, accurate, quick catch and throw, fluid footwork, over the top release.

Dylan McGuire, Camdenton, 2017
McGuire is a 5-foot-8 200-pound right-handed hitting catcher from Camdenton HS in central Missouri.  He ran a 7.82 60 and a 5.16 home-to-first.  He has an exit velo of 81 mph. At the plate, balanced set up, efficient swing mechanics, no wasted movement, middle approach, showed some pull power during batting practice.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.22 and 2.45, 69 mph positional velo, over the top release, fluid actions, mostly accurate throws. 

Trey Nichols, Bowling Green, 2017
Nichols is a 6-foot 170-pound right-handed hitting catcher from Fort Zuwalt West HS in the St. Louis area.  He ran a 6.87 60, on of the fastest times for the event, and has a 4.53 home-to-first.  He posted an 82 mph exit velo. At the plate, tall stance, miminal load, in line stride, swing produced line drives to middle and pull side of field during batting practice. Behind the plate, pop times between 1.91 and 2.00, top pop time of the event, 80 mph positional velo, top velo among catchers, quick actions, over the top release, plays through the catch, quick feet, throws have carry to the bag, showed good instincts during game action.

Michael Polete, Mehlville, 2017
Polete is a 6-foot-1 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher in from Mehville HS in the St. Louis area.  He ran a 7.47 60 and has a 4.70 home to first.  His exit velo was 83 mph. At the plate, starts in open stance, inline stride, gap-to-gap approach, level path, body under control.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.00 and 2.27, one of the top pop times for the event, 70 mph positional velo, over the top release, fluid catch and throw with fluid footwork, mostly accurate throws. 

Nate Thompson, Park Hill, 2017
Thompson is a 5-foot-8 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher from Park Hill HS in the Kansas City area.  He ran a 7.52 60 and has a home-to-first time of 4.51-seconds.  He has an 82 mph exit velo. At the plate, slightly open stance, smooth rhythm, short path to contact, swing produced mostly pull line drives to pull side with some oppo contact, loose hands, singled to left in game action, aggressive on bases.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.08 and 2.21, 79 mph positional velo, one of top velos for the event, arm works, strong and aggressive, quick transfer with quick release, throws have carry, mostly accurate.

Reid Wilson, Hickman, 2017
Wilson is a 5-foot-10 170-pound right-handed hitting catcher from Hickman HS in Columbia.  He ran a 6.95 60, one of the top times for the event, and a 4.71 home to first.  He has a 90 mph exit velo, one of the top RHH velos for the event.  At the plate, tall stance, inline stride, repeats swing, solid consistent contact during batting practice, gap-to-gap line drives.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.02 and 2.20, 78 mph positional velo, one of the top velos for the event, high three quarters release, quick footwork with fluid exchange, mostly accurate throws.
