Class of 2020 Games: Catchers Analysis

Prep Baseball Report - Kansas held the Class of 2020 Games at Neosho County Community College in Chanute, Kansas on June 18.

Player profiles have been updated with running times and velocities along with a video of their performance.

Bobby Allen RHP / OF / Olathe Northwest, KS / 2020 Allen is a 5-foot-11 180-pound switch-hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 7.32 60 and a 4.39 home to first.  He has an 84 mph exit velocity. At the plate, thin base and tall set up, pre pitch rhythm in hands, hands walk away from in line stride, gap to gap approach, level bat path.  Behind the plate, pop times 2.03 to 2.15-seconds, 76 mph positional velocity, thin set in base, quick transfer, over the top release, throws have carry and are mostly accurate.

Daniel Bebee C / SS / Shawnee Mission South, KS / 2020 Bebee is an athletic 6-foot-2 190-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 7.22 60 and a 4.66 home to first.  He had an 87 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, open stance, leg kick, lands slightly closed, accelerates through the ball, quick and strong hands, power to pull side, fast bat speed, feel for the barrel.  Behind the plate, 78 mph positional velocity, pop times between 1.90-2.01-seconds, short over the top arm slot, quick exchange, feet create momentum to throw, mostly accurate throws with carry to the bag.

Chayton Beck C / SS / Liberty , MO / 2020 Beck is a long and lean 6-foot-2 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 7.32 60 and a 4.82 home to first.  He has an 87 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, starts with a square base, minimal hand load, no wasted movement, controlled leg lift, simple and repeatable swing, power to pull side, consistent hard contact during hitting evals.  Behind the plate, pop times between 1.88 and 1.98-seconds, 77 mph positional velocity, quick actions, staggered set up, high three quarters arm slot, exchange and footwork in sync, mostly accurate throws to the bag, some with carry.

Andrew Brubeck C / 3B / Mill Valley, KS / 2020 Brubeck is a 5-foot-11 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 7.57 60 and a 4.36 home to first.  He had an 86 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced in stance, rhythm in hands, loads against back side, level path with controlled bat speed, gap to gap line drives, has feel for the barrel.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.05 and 2.09 seconds, 72 mph positional velocity, wide base in set up, fluid footwork with momentum to throw working in line towards second base, over the top release, mostly accurate throws some with carry to the bag.

Nate Burdette OF / C / Maranatha Christian Academy, KS / 2020 Burdette is a 5-foot-9 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 7.41 60 and a 4.76 home to first.  He had an 88 mph exit velocity. At the plate, open stance, some hand load with weight shift, quick hands, level path, works over front side at times, middle to pull line drives.  Behind the plate, 2.03 to 2.15 pop times, 71 mph positional velocity, high three quarters release, quick catch and throw, clean exchange, throws with momentum, mostly accurate throws.

Colby Donahoe C / SS / Lees Summit West, MO / 2020 Donahoe is a 5-foot-11 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 47.57 60 and a 4.36 home to first and had an 84 mph exit velocity. At the plate, starts in a crouched position, loads into back leg slightly changing planes with eye level, in line stride, loose hands, gap to gap approach, stays balanced.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.18 and 2.27-seconds, 70 mph positional velocity, over the top arm slot, high transfer with clean exchange, throws with momentum through the plate, mostly accurate throws.

Jake English C / 3B / Olathe South , KS / 2020 EEnglish is a 6-foot-2 210-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class, a Kansas commit.  He ran a 7.07 60 and 4.83 home to first.  He had a 93 mph exit velocity. At the plate, tall set up, works into an athletic position with in line stride, smooth acceleration, strong hands with quick bat speed, power to pull side, gap to gap approach, feel for the barrel.  Behind the plate, pop times between 1.91 and 1.98 seconds, 74 mph positional velocity, stays under control with clean exchanges as he replaces his feet, short over the top arm slot, throws are accurate with carry to the bag.

Diego Escamillla C / SS / Haisville campus, KS / 2020 Escamilla is a 5-foot-9 165-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a  7.04 60 and a 4.50 home to first.  He has an 84 mph exit velocity. At the plate, open stance, slight hand load with stride, level path through the zone, works both gaps.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.15 and 2.28-seconds, 74 mph positional velocity, footwork creates momentum to throw, clean exchanges, over the top arm slot.

Gunnar Hansen C / 3B / Superior, WI / 2020 Hansen is a 6-foot 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Wisconsin’s 2020 class.  He ran a 7.39 60 and 4.46 home to first, his exit velocity was 86 mph.  At the plate, starts in a tall stance, controlled weight shift to back side, toe tap, short in line stride, level path, uses middle of the field.  Behind the plate, pop times between 1.90 and 2.03-seconds, 79 mph positional velocity, over the top arm slot, staggered set up, quick catch and throw on time with footwork, throws have carry, mostly accurate.

Caden Matlon C / 3B / Grain Valley, MO / 2020 Matlon is a 6-foot-2 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 7.31 60 and a 4.51 home to first.  He had an 84 mph exit velocity. At the plate, starts with open stance, loads against back side with quiet hands, lands closed with stride, hands work inside the ball with gap to gap approach.  Behind the plate, pop times between 1.99 and 2.18-seconds, 73 mph positional velocity, over the top release, clean exchange, quick footwork on tome with transfer, accurate throws, some with carry.

Kaleb Mitchell C / 3B / Lee's Summit West, MO / 2020 Mitchell is a 6-foot 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a  4.90 home to first and had an 84 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced stance, smooth and controlled load to back side, some hand load, accelerates through the ball, gap to gap approach, quick hands.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.14 and 2.34 seconds, 70 mph positional velocity, staggered set up, replaces feet on time with transfer, fluid actions, short over the top arm slot, mostly accurate throws.

Aidan Thompson C / 3B / Olathe North, KS / 2020 Thompson is a 5-foot-11 190-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 7.54 60 and a 4.56 home to first.  He has an 88 mph exit velocity. At the plate, open stance, minimal load, attacks the ball, level bat path through contact, works the middle of the field, stays balanced throughout swing.  Behind the plate, pop times between 1.92 and 2.13-seconds, 74 mph positional velocity, sits low and square with flexibility in hips, catches ball out front with clean exchanges as he replaces his feet, throws with momentum and accuracy.

Brady Stevenson C / OF / Spring Hill , KS / 2020 Stevenson is a 6-foot 185-pound left-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 7.51 60 and a 4.90 home to first.  He had an 86 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced set up, slight load with weight shift, short and in line with stride, some lift to bat path, works to pulls side with occasional oppo line drive.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.00 and 2.09-seconds, 72 mph positional velocity, square set up base, short over the top arm slot, quick exchange on time with footwork, feet replace creating momentum, mostly accurate throws, some with carry to the bag.

Spencer Whitfield C / 1B / McPherson, KS / 2020 Whitfield is a well built 6-foot 195-pound switch hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 4.82 home to first and a 7.90 60.  He had an 80 mph exit velocity. At the plate, simple and repeatable from both sides, pre pitch rhythm in hands, minimal load, in line stride, slightly longer swing from left side with pull approach, works gap to gap from right side, slight lift in bat path during finish.  Behind the plate, staggered set up with thing base, over the top arm slot, mostly accurate throws, 70 mph positional velocity, 2.04 to 2.08-second pop times.
