Daily Game Round Up-March 20

The game time temperature was a chilly 34 degrees with a cold breeze at Vianney HS where No. 11 Vianney advanced to the championship game of the Lindbergh/Mehlville tournament by defeating Webster Groves 5 to 3. Alex Hoffman, in his first start of the year after missing most of last season went five strong innings, striking out six batters while scattering five hits and allowing three earned runs.

“The defense backed me up today and I was able to hit my spots,” said Hoffman on what made him so effective. “I thought my curveball worked well, and I just felt good overall, especially since I really didn’t throw much last season.”

Vianney got on the board first, with an RBI single off the bat of Brendan McEntee in the top of the second inning that scored Ryan Wood

Vianney tacked on two more runs in the third to take a 3-0 lead when Matt Dreyer came around to score on a wild pitch and Chris Cornelius grounded into a fielders choice allowing Matt Brown to cross the plate.

Webster Groves didn’t go down without a fight, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. The big hit coming on a two RBI double off the bat of Jake Perry

Vianney responded with a run in the fifth inning, a sacrifice fly by Kevin Dvorak that scored Matt Brown and another run in the top of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jack Klages

“Our pitchers did a nice job and for the most part threw strikes and we made some plays in the field,” said Vianney head coach Scott Brown. “Hitting wise, we haven’t hit our stride yet, and we need to have some more productive at bats.”
