By: Diego Solares
Area Scout, Illinois & Missouri

On Wednesday, September 7th, the PBR Missouri staff traveled to Hillsboro, MO, to host the Jefferson College JUCO Scout Day. This event featured 25+ players from the Vikings' junior college program that participated in a pro-style workout in front of our staff. Last season, the Vikings finished 33-24 and made it to the Region 16 championship game.

Today we’ll spend some time highlighting some of the top prospects on this Vikings’ squad. Read below for nuggets and more information on which players popped to our scouts from the Jefferson College Scout Day.

POSITION PLAYERS

Colby Ott SS / Jefferson, MO / 2021

Athletic, 5-foot-11, 180-pound frame with lean strength. Was a top offensive performer for the Vikings at the Creekside JUCO Invite. Athletic right-handed swing, works direct to the baseball with barrel feel, averaged 88.5 mph per batted ball at this event. Fluid on the infield, soft hands that should stick on the dirt moving forward, peaked at 85 mph across the infield in his workout. Also runs a 6.91 60.

Hesston Gray SS / Mansfield, MO / 2020

6-foot-3, 210-pounds; athletic, well-proportioned strength and really looks the part in a uniform. Returns as a key offensive threat for the Vikings, slashing .309/.445/.545 with seven home runs and nearly as many walks (30) as strikeouts (38) in 2022. Flashed some opposite field power in BP at this event, 93.8 mph max exit velocity. Sure-handed on the infield, profiles best at third base. One to watch in this JeffCo lineup this spring.

Zane Roos OF / Lindbergh , MO / 2022

Physically built 6-foot-2, 215-pound athlete, looks like a football player. Played a key role as a middle-of-the-order type bat for Lindbergh’s state playoff team this past spring. Owns several loud tools that could translate to impact success at the next level - 6.78 60, 97.7 mph max EV, 331 ft. peak. Generated some of the hardest contact on average (92.5 mph) per batted ball at this event from a clean, powerful right-handed swing. Arm plays with natural carry from the outfield to home, peaked at 94 mph on his firmest bullet. A first-year follow with athleticism and juice to know for the Vikings.

Joe Siervo SS / Parkway Central, MO / 2022

Lean, athletic 6-foot-1, 190-pound build with wiry strength. Ranked inside the top-50 prospects in Missouri’s 2022 high school class and was the catalyst for a Parkway Central team that made it to the 5A state playoffs this past spring. Figures to be a top-of-the-lineup type bat, generates consistent line drive contact from a short, direct right-handed swing with clear rotational athleticism. Floats around the outfield with nimble feet, covers ground and breaks down in rhythm. Should factor into the Vikings’ offense in his first season.

PITCHING PROSPECTS

Jacob Jarvis LHP / Farmington , MO / 2021

Strong, well-proportioned 6-foot-3, 198-pound frame with room to tack on more muscle. Generated easy velocity from a high slot on average (6 ft.) at this event, working east-to-west and in the zone. Reached a 90.9 mph high at the Jefferson College Scout Day, pitching at 89-90 mph throughout his ‘pen. Spun his fastball at 2,300+ RPM on average, also averaged 18 inches of vertical break, per TrackMan. Landed a short wrinkle slider for strikes with consistency, limited spin on a firm low-80s changeup, too. Figures to be one of the top arms for this talented Vikings’ pitching staff.

Jacob Roettgen LHP / Jefferson City, MO / 2021

Large, physical 6-foot-3, 235-pound frame, thick lower half. Logged 40+ innings on the mound this past spring. Put together one of the more polished ‘pens we saw across our JUCO circuit and has been generating buzz throughout the fall. Pumps all areas of the zone with a high-80s fastball and compliments it with three other pitches. Creates late arm-side run and sink on a 79-81 mph splitter that appears to be his primary secondary, also spins a sharp slider with late break in the high-70s. Rounds his arsenal out with a firm changeup thrown with arm speed at 82-84 mph. A clean, polished strike-throwing southpaw that has a starter profile.

Luke Nichols LHP / Bell City, MO / 2021

Strong, athletic southpaw that really looks the part in a uniform. Returns after a productive freshman campaign last season for JeffCo, pitching to a 3.14 ERA across 28 ⅔ innings. Fluid mover downhill, fastball plays at 86-89 mph with some deception from a tight, unconventional arm slot. Upper-70s slider shows two-plane break on occasion and he confidently turns over a changeup with fastball arm speed and slot in the low-80s. Another southpaw with a starter’s profile that should play an important role for this pitching staff.

Cale Willson RHP / Blair Oaks , MO / 2022

Physically imposing 6-foot-5, 255-pound thick, sturdy frame. Uses that size to get down the mound, averaging 7+ feet of extension on his fastball. Threw the firmest bullet at the JeffCo Scout Day, topping at 91.1 mph while sitting at 89-90 mph. Confidence and conviction to spin a 73-74 mph breaking ball beneath the zone, works on a vertical axis with direct downer action at 2,700+ RPM on average. Completes his arsenal with a 79-81 mph splitter that he effectively limits spin on.

Dalen Stewart LHP / Willard , MO / 2021

Missouri State commit. Was one of the biggest winners from the PUMA Classic in early September. Athletic, polished all-around operation with a certain ease and fluidity to him. Consistent strike-thrower with upper-80s heat on his fastball, peaking at 91 mph. Spins a 77-80 mph slider with depth and occasional late break for strikes. Adds another weapon on the mound for the Vikings as an advanced pitchability arm.

Kannon Nesslage RHP / Kirkwood, MO / 2021

Long, lanky 6-foot-6, 210-pound frame with highly projectable limbs. Works with tempo, fluid mover downhill and controls levers well for his size. Fastball plays from a high slot on average, creating a steep angle downhill in the upper-80s with feel for the zone. Also generates 7.6 ft. on average of extension on his fastball. Comfortable landing a shorter wrinkle slider with some depth for strikes at 77-78 mph. Maintains fastball extension, intent, and slot with a low-80s splitter that tumbles. Former quarterback recruit with a high ceiling on the mound for Jefferson College.
