DeSmet 2, Hickman 6
The Hickman Kewpies needed just two offensive innings to earn a comeback win against a fundamental DeSmet Spartan team, securing a spot in the class 5 Missouri state championship game.  The Spartans opened up the scoring in the bottom half of the first inning with a well manufactured run.  After a leadoff infield single from Spencer DaeschDaesch then stole second and later advanced to third on a pitch in the dirt.  With runners on second and third, Spartan 3-hole hitter drove a ball to the right center field warning track to drive in Daesch with a sacrifice fly.  DeSmet added another run in the fourth inning.  Designated hitter Alex Logusch singled down the third baseline, advanced to second on a ground out, then with two outs put the pressure on the Kewpie defense stealing third, the third sailed into left field and Logusch came in to score putting the Spartans up 2-0 after four innings.  DeSmet starting pitcher Will Martin held the Hickman offense in check for four solid innings.  Martin had great command of his fastball and his breaking ball, getting ahead of hitters and pitching to contact, letting his defense work behind him.  The top of the fifth inning is when the Kewpies took the momentum and ran with it.  Shortstop Tyler Montgomery led off with a single through the 6-hole.  A sacrifice bunt moved Montgomery to second.  Then back to back RBI doubles from the nine hitter, Teague Robertson, and the leadoff man, Cameron Chick tied the game up at two.  Hickman took that momentum with them on defense in the bottom half of the fifth.  Kewpie catcher Bennett Patton redeemed himself in a big way after the error that led to a Spartan run back in the fourth by gunning down two consecutive Spartans attempting to steal second.  Shortstop Montgomery followed that up by making an outstanding diving backhand play for the third out.  Montgomery immediately followed up that big defensive play by hitting 2-run shot into the left field bleachers to put the Kewpies up 4-2 in the top of the sixth.  Connor Ashton would extend that lead later in the inning with a two out ground rule double that drove in two.  Hickman now leads 6-2.  Starting pitcher Kyle Brown was solid for the Kewpies giving up just two runs on four hits, four walks, and three strikeouts.  Brown’s curveball was the key to his success, throwing it for a strike in any count to keep the Spartan hitters off balance.  He spotted his fastball very well to go along with that sharp curveball.  Jake Deakins, a tall lefty took over in the sixth inning for the Kewpies and made quick work of the Spartans with a 1-2-3 inning.  Deakins used a heavy dose of slurve-like breaking pitches to strikeout three over 1 2/3 innings.  DeSmet would battle in the bottom of the seventh to load the bases, bringing the tying run to the plate with two outs.  But Hickman’s centerfielder Bennett Patton came in to blow a 3-2 fastball by Stephen Randazzo and the Kewpies earned a trip to the state final.  Hickmans’ Cameron Chick finished the day 2-3 with two opposite field doubles and an RBI.  Right fielder Coulton Doyle added two hits and a run, and Tyler Montgomery finished 2-4 with a homerun, two runs scored and two runs driven in for the Kewpies.  Spencer Daesch had a nice day going 2-3 with two stolen bases and a run scored for the Spartans.
