Missouri Underclass Games: Catchers Analysis

On June 13, Prep Baseball Report Missouri held the Missouri Underclass Games.  Over 80 players in the 2019, 2020 and 2021 classes attended.

In the days to come, we will break down the event position-by-position.  Today we will take a look at the catchers. Fourteen catchers took part in the defensive evaluations. Eight catchers were from the 2019 class, three catchers from the 2020 class and three catchers from the 2021 class. Players are listed in alphabetical order.

Player's profiles have been updated with profile pictures, videos and stats from the event. Coaches will have new profiles to add their dashboard on ScoutPlus and players will be able to update information on their profile with ProspectPlus.

Catchers

Jackson Dixon C / Park Hill South, MO / 2019

Dixon is a 5-foot-10 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 8.09 laser time 60 and a 5.48 home to first.  He has an 83 mph exit velo. At the plate,  balanced stance, hands separate from stride to load, swing produces mostly middle to side contact during batting practice. Behind the plate, pop times between 2.10 and 2.26, short over the top release, feet are quick and on time with exchange, mostly accurate throws, 69 mph positional velo. During game action, singled to right field and grounded out sharply twice, 4.97 home to first.

Zachry Hanlan C / Central St Joseph, MO / 2019

Hanlan is a durable 5-foot-10 205-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 7.72 laser timed 60 and a 4.82 home to first.  He has a 92 mph exit velo. At the plate, takes and aggressive swing, showing pull side power during batting practice to the pull side of the field, rhythm in hands pre-swing, controlled leg kick, accelerated bat with loose hands.  Behind the plate, pop times at 2.16 to 2.34-seconds, quick transfer, quick feet, momentum toward second base to throw, mostly accurate throws, 73 mph positional velo. During game action, took aggressive swings, tripled to center field showing power. 

Hunter Hiett C / Cape Girardeau Central, MO / 2020

Heitt is a 5-foot-11 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 7.50 laser timed 60 and a 4.81 home to first.  He has an 89 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stance, loads into back side with hand separation from stride, quick bat speed, mostly pull side contact during batting practice, body stays under control.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.17 and 2.25-seconds, 70 mph positional velo, over the top release, clean transfer on time with fluid footwork. Singled to left field and through the right side during game action, hard line drive to left side.

Chase Hoeber C / Liberty-Wentzville, MO / 2019

Hoeber is a 6-foot-3 165-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 7.69 laser timed 60 and a 4.39 home to first.  He posted an 82 mph exit velo. At the plate, starts tall and slightly open, rhythm in hands, leg kick, swing created line drives gap-to-gap.  Behind the plate, flexible, gives low target, pop times between 1.97 and 2.13-seconds, athletic footwork, over the top release, momentum to throw, accurate, 74 mph positional velo.

Benjamin Jones C / Liberty, MO / 2020

Jones is a strong-bodied 5-foot-9 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 7.63 laser timed 60 and a 4.69 home to first.  He has an 80 mph exit velo. At the plate, aggressive swinger, smooth load into back side, in line stride, balanced set up, loose and quick hands, short path to contact, hands work inside ball.  Behind the plate, pop times between 1.99 and 2.13-seconds, over the top release, lower arm slot, 74 mph positional velo, glove to hand transfer on time with feet, aggressive and fluid actions, accurate throws. In game action, grounded out twice to shortstop and singled to right field.

Auston Luna OF / Dora, MO / 2021

Luna is a 5-foot-10 150-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2021 class.  He ran a 7.59 laser timed 60 and a 4.70 home to first.  He has a 77 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced set up, short in line stride, minimal load, no wasted movement, level path through the zone, middle of the field contact during batting practice. Behind the plate, 2.29 to 2.58 pop times, 68 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, thin base in set up, fluid transfer and throw, feet creates momentum.

Bryson Luna C / Dora, MO / 2021

Luna is a 5-foot-10 150-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 7.57 laser timed 60 and a 4.62 home to first.  He has an 80 mph exit velo. At the plate, starts in a wide stance, pre loaded in back side, hands are quick through the zone creating a level path, mostly middle of the field line drives during batting practice.  Behind the plate, over the top release, 2.29-2.39-second pop times, 67 mph positional velo, clean transfer, footwork is fluid, clean transfer. Singled to left field in game action.

Shea McGahan C / Lindbergh , MO / 2021

McGahan is a 5-foot-10 155-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2021 class.  He ran a 8.09 laser timed 60 and a 5.41 home to first.  He has an 82 mph exit velo. At the plate, swing produced middle to pull side line drives, open stance, minimal hand load, leg kick, body stays under control, balanced swing.  Behind the plate, 2.05 to 2.21 pop times, 72 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, quick exchange, fluid footwork. In game action, hit ball hard in three at bats, collected two singles to each gap. 

Kamron Morriss C / Blair Oaks, MO / 2020

Morriss is a 5-foot-10 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 7.71 laser timed 60 and a 4.96 home to first.  He has an 84 mph exit velo. At the plate, open stance, controlled leg kick to load, minimal hand load, gap to gap approach. Behind the plate, pop times between 2.07 and 2.17-seconds, 72 mph positional velo, over the top release, fluid exchange on time with footwork, short and quick first step, mostly accurate throws. Contact was to left side of the field during game action.

Garrett Payne C / Francis Howell , MO / 2019

Payne is a strong 6-foot 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 8.46 laser timed 60 and a 5.38 home to first.  He has an 84 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced set up, short stride, slight hand load, body stays under control, level path through he zone, repeatable swing, mostly line drives to the pull side and middle of the field. Behind the plate, wide set up, 2.18 t0 2.33 pop times, 70 mph positional velo, over the top release, plays through he ball, accurate throws. Sprayed to both sides of the field in game action, including a hard hit ground out to third base, 4.72 home to first.

Lucas Payne C / DeSmet Jesuit, MO / 2019

Payne is a lean 6-foot-2 165-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 7.58 laser timed 60 and a 5.17 home to first.  He has an 83 mph exit velo. At the plate, in line stance, loaded in back leg pre swing, rhythm in hands, some load in hands, swing produces middle to pull side contact during batting practice.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.09 and 2.37-seconds, 74 mph positional velo, flexible, gives low target, quick catch and throw, short over the top release, mostly accurate throws with a clean exchange.

Brady Prewitt C / Raytown South, MO / 2019

Prewitt is a durable 5-foot-10 167-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 8.22 laser timed 60 and a 79 mph exit velo.  He has an 85 mph exit velo. At the plate, showed power to the pull side, open stance, smooth rhythm, accelerated and quick hands, level path though the zone, consistent hard contact during batting practice.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.06 and 2.17, 72 mph positional velo, quick actions, short over the top release, momentum through the throw, gives low target, moves well to block. Singled twice in game action, both to left-center.

Chad Silvey C / Farmington, MO / 2019

Silvey is a strong 6-foot-1 195-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 8.35 laser timed 60 and a 5.07 home to first.  He has an exit veto of 85 mph. At the late, balanced set up, smooth rhythm, minimal load, in line stride, swing produced pull to middle line drives during batting practice.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.17 and 2.23-seconds, 68 mph positional velo, over the top release, quick exchange, fluid footwork, mostly accurate throws. Doubled to left field in game action, flew out twice.

John Stallcup C / Webster Groves, MO / 2019

Stallcup is a 6-foot 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 8.58 laser timed 60 and a 5.10 home to first.  He has an exit veto of 87 mph. At the plate, athletic stance, loads against back side, level path, strong hands with accelerated barrel speed, level path through the zone with pull side power.  Behind the plate, 2.05 to 2.17 pop times, 72 mph positional velo, advanced actions, quick catch and throw, accurate throws to the bag, moves well to block. Hard hit single to left field, and flew out deep to left in game action.
