Missouri Underclass Games: Middle Infield Analysis



On June 13, Prep Baseball Report Missouri held the Missouri Underclass Games.  Over 80 players in the 2019, 2020 and 2021 classes attended.

In the days to come, we will break down the event position-by-position.  Today we will take a look at the Middle Infielders. Players are listed in alphabetical order.

Player's profiles have been updated with profile pictures, videos and stats from the event. Coaches will have new profiles to add their dashboard on ScoutPlus and players will be able to update information on their profile with ProspectPlus.

Middle Infielders

Tyler Bastunas SS / Timberland, MO / 2019

Bastunas is a 5-foot-9 155-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 7.57 60 and a 4.78 home to first.  He has an 89 mph exit velo. At the plate, starts slightly open, controlled leg kick, aggressive swing speed, leverage in lower half, showed pull side power during batting practice.  On the infield, 87 mph positional velo, quick arm, over the top release, moves well side to side, fields ball in athletic position, quick catch and throw, mostly accurate throws, athletic actions.

Tyler Blum SS / Valle Catholic, MO / 2019

Blum is a 6-foot-3 180-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 7.75 laser timed 60 and a 5.09 home to first.  He has an 81 mph exit velo. At the plate, open stance, short in line stride, level path through the zone, body stays controlled during swing, middle to pull side contact.  On the infield, 67 mph positional velo, quick transfer, fluid footwork with clean exchange, long levers, mostly accurate throws. Singled to left field in game action.

Nathan Chester 2B / Liberty North, MO / 2020

Chester is a 5-foot-11 170-pound right-handed hitting second baseman in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 7.59 laser timed 60 and a 4.70 home to first.  He has an 86 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced set up, controlled leg lift, loose hands, quick bat speed, ball jumped off bat gap to gap, repeats swing. On the infield, short high three quarters release, aggressive footwork to the ball, plays through the catch, soft hands, accurate throws. Singled to left field and doubled to right center in game action.

Cade Clemons SS / Lee's Summit West, MO / 2019

Clemons is a long levered 6-foot-2 180-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 7.41 laser timed 60 and a 4.70 home to first.  He has a 91 mph exit velo. At the plate, wide stance, short stride, level path through the zone, quick bat speed, minimal hand load, mostly pull side contact during batting practice.  On the infield, 84 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, quick to the ball, quick transfer on time with footwork, mostly accurate throws, projectable frame. Singled and lined out to short in game action.

Brock Daniels SS / Vianney, MO / 2021

Daniels is a 5-foot-11 160-pound left-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2021 class and has recently committed to Missouri.  He ran a 7.74 laser timed 60 and has an exit velo of 76 mph. At the plate, balanced set up, short stride with small leg lift, quick hands, short path to contact, flashed pull power, gap-to-gap approach.  On the infield, 68 mph positional velo, three quarters, soft hands with quick exchange, hands and feet work together, athletic to the ball, momentum through the catch. Collected a pair of singles to right field in game action, stayed inside the ball.

Nathan Gray 2B / Liberty, MO / 2019

Gray is a 5-foot-11 172-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 7.58 laser timed 60 and a 4.87 home to first.  He has a 77 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stance, quick in line stride, minimal hand load, aggressive swing, feel for the barrell, swing produces consistent line drives during batting practice.  On the infield, 79 mph positional velo, three quarters release, fluid actions to the ball, momentum after the catch, clean transfers, mostly accurate throws. Singled to center field in game action.

Jake Hansen SS / Marquette, MO / 2019

Hansen is a 5-foot-10 165-pound left-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 7.73 laser timed 60 and a 4.60 home to first.  He has an 82 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced swing, in line stride, pull side approach, quick bat, high finish, loose hands.  On the infield, 82 mph positional velo, athletic action, advanced glove, clean transfer, feet create momentum to throw, moves well to the ball, accurate throws.

Griffin Henry SS / Lees Summit West, MO / 2020

Henry is a 6-foot-1 177-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 7.74 laser timed 60 and a 4.81 home to first.  He has an 86 mph exit velo. At the plate, open stance with rhythm, soft in line stride, some hand load, level path through zone, stayed through contact on most swings, line drives gap to gap.  On the infield, 80 mph positional velo, fluid and athletic actions to the ball, soft hands, quick exchange and throw, momentum through the catch, accurate thrower.

Hunter Hiett C / Cape Girardeau Central, MO / 2020

Heiett is a 5-foot-11 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 7.50 laser timed 60 and a 4.81 home to first.  He has an 89 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stance, loads into back side with hand separation from stride, quick bat speed, mostly pull side contact during batting practice, body stays under control. On the infield, 75 mph positional velo, smooth actions with soft hands, fluid footwork on time with transfer, soft hands, mostly accurate throws. Had two singles to left field in game action.

Grant Jones SS / Joplin, MO / 2019

Jones is a 5-foot-11 170-pound left-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 7.29 laser timed 60 and a 4.56 home to first.  He has an exit velocity of 88 mph. At the plate, balanced stance, controlled stride with a smooth load, level path through the zone, in batting practice swing produced middle to pull side line drives.  On the infield, high over the top release, soft hands, stays under the ball with glove, fluid exchange with clean transfer, footwork creates momentum after the catch, 82 mph positional velo.

Tavian Josenberger SS / Park Hill, MO / 2020

Josenberger is a 5-foot-9 145-pound switch-hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 7.24 laser timed 60 and a 4.63 home to first.  He has an exit velocity of 75 mph from the left side and a 79 mph exit velocity from the right side. At the plate, similar swing from both side, a bit more open from left side, smooth rhythm, slight load in lower half, no wasted movement in hands, gap-to-gap contact from both side, squared up more balls from the left side, loose hands and feel fro the barrel.  On the infield, 82 mph positional velo, athletic actions with accurate throws, high three quarters release, plays through the catch, quick feet on time with transfer, quick catch and throw.

Alex Logusch SS / De Smet , MO / 2020

Logusch is a solidly built 6-foot 170-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2020 class. He ran a 7.55 laser timed 60 and a 4.59 home to first.  He has an 88 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stance, smooth load, attacks ball, aggressive swing, quick hands, loose with feel for the barrel, consistent hard contact gap to gap.  On the infield, over the top release, 85 mph positional velo, advanced actions with quick feet and transfer, mostly accurate throws.

Mason Luna SS / Dora, MO / 2021

Luna is a 5-foot-10 150-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2021 class.  He ran a 7.47 laser timed 60 and 4.53 home to first.  He has a 78 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced and simple swing mechanics, repeats swing, no wasted movement, quick hands, middle to pull side contact during batting practice.  On the infield, 75 mph positional velo, three quarters arm slot, field ball out front, fluid footwork with clean exchange, projectable frame, mostly accurate throws. 

Drew Mize SS / Fort Zumwalt West, MO / 2019

Mize is a 5-foot-10 156-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 7.77 laser timed 60 and a 4.50 home to first.  He has an 86 mph exit velo. At the plate, slightly open, short in line stride, smooth pre swing rhythm, loose hands, mostly middle to pull side line drives during batting practice.  On the infield, 75 mph positional velo, loose three quarters release, smooth actions with clean exchange, athletic footwork, mostly accurate throws, frame has ability to add strength as he continues to develop to go along with already athletic actions.  Singled to centerfield and left field in game action.

Brady Prewitt C / Raytown South, MO / 2019

Prewitt is a durable 5-foot-10 167-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 8.22 laser timed 60 and a 79 mph exit velo.  He has an 85 mph exit velo. At the plate, showed power to the pull side, open stance, smooth rhythm, accelerated and quick hands, level path though the zone, consistent hard contact during batting practice. On the infield, 79 mph positional velo, clean exchange soft hands, fluid glove to hand transition, mostly accurate throws.

Preston Salazar SS / Kirkwood , MO / 2019

Salazar is a 6-foot-4 178-pound right-handed hitting outfielder in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a  7.41 laser timed 60 and a 4.89 home to first.  He has an 86 mph exit velo. At the plate, starts with high hands and thin stance, hits with leverage in lower half, takes an aggressive swing, flashing power to pull gap, long levers with thin frame.  On the infield, 84 mph positional velo, over the top release, gets momentum to throw after the catch, clean exchange with fluid footwork, throws downhill, accurate throws.  Doubled in the left-center gap during game action.

Shane Wilhelm SS / Columbia , IL / 2019

Wilhelm is a 5-foot-11 170-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Illinois’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.36 laser timed 60 and a 4.76 home to first.  He has a 90 mph exit velo. At the plate, consistent hard line drives gap to gap during batting practice, balanced set up, short stride, quick hands with aggressive swing, squared up ball with bat speed.  On the infield, advanced actions, high three quarters release, long arm circle, athletic footwork to the ball, soft hands with quick release, accurate throws. Singled to right field in game action.

Danny Sheehan SS / Chaminade, MO / 2019

Sheehan is a strongly built 5-foot-9 165-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2019 class. He ran a 7.78 laser timed 60 and a 4.84 home to first.  He has an 81 mph exit velo. At the plate, starts with a wide stance, short stride, hands work inside ball, gap-to-gap approach, level bat path.  On the infield, 74 mph positional velo, short over the top release, works around the ball and through the catch, fluid footwork, quick catch and throw, accurate thrower.

Robby Taul SS / Alton , IL / 2019

Taul is a 6-foot-1 160-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Illinois’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.61 laser timed 60 and a 4.72 home to first.  He has an 86 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stance, slight rotation to load, long and lean frame, quick hands, gap to gap approach, flashed pull side pop.  On the infield, 81 mph positional velo, loose three quarters release, athletic actions, works around the ball and through the catch, quick catch and throws. Collected a single in game action

Mason Whiteside 2B / Fort Zumwalt West, MO / 2021

Whiteside is a 5-foot-10 155-pound left-handed hitting second baseman in Missouri’s 2021 class.  He ran 7.79 laser timed 60 and a 4.87 home to first.  He has a 78 mph exit velo. At the plate, open stance, leg kick with hand load, aggressive swing, mostly pull side contact during batting practice, does not get cheated with swing. On the infield, quick catch and throw, fluid actions to the ball, fields the ball in athletic position, soft hands, momentum before the catch, mostly accurate throws.  Singled to center three times during the game.

Gabe Worthington SS / Hannibal, MO / 2019

Worthington is a strong 5-foot-11 175-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 7.65 laser timed 60 and a 4.66 home to first.  He has an 80 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stance, smooth rhythm, level bat path, stays on ball after contact, mostly pull side line drive during batting practice.  On the infield, 74 mph positional velo, three quarters release, fluid actions to the ball, momentum after the catch, hans and feet in sync, mostly accurate throws.
