Oran and Santa Fe Advance to the Class 1 Championship

Last year Oran and Santa Fe met in the Class 1 semi-finals, with Santa Fe coming out victorious and ultimately taking home the Class 1 championship. Today, the teams will battle it out for the Class 1 title.

Oran 5   Sturgeon 1
Coach Mitch Wood’s Oran team kept his career going for one more game, with a chance to retire from coaching by Oran attempting to capture their first Class 1 championship.

Oran scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning before getting an out, which was more than enough run support to back the strong outing of junior Seth Ressel on the mound. Ressel scattered five hits in the complete game win, striking out seven and allowing an earned run.

The Oran bats attacked right out of the chute, led by Ressel leading the inning off by reaching on an error and advancing to third on a single by Kody Moore. Alex Huering followed with a fielders choice groundout, scoring Ressel and advancing Moore to third. Huering would then steal second and a wild pitch allowed Moore to score and Huering to advance to third, and putting Oran up 2-0. The next batter, Jacob Priggle tripled, scoring Huering, followed by an RBI ground out by Bear Hicks, extending the lead to 4-0.

The over matched Sturgeon team scored their lone run in the top of the fifth, on a RBI groundout.

After a one out triple by Huering in the fifth, Priggle would drive home his second run of the game on a RBI single, putting the score at 5-1.

Oran will put ace Kody Moore on the mound today, in which will be the last game of a successful high school career. In last year’s semi-final game, Moore threw  4 2/3 innings in relief, allowing just one hit.

Santa Fe 11   Dadeville 4
Santa Fe pounded out 16 hits en route to an easy victory to advance to the Class 1 championship game and defend their title against an Oran team hungry for revenge.

Sante Fe plated two runs in the bottom of the first with the first three batters of the order recording hits. Wyatt Wilkinson led the inning off with a double and scored when the next batter (and starting pitcher) Chad Tieman singled in the hole. Andrew Curry followed with a triple, scoring Tieman and giving Santa Fe a 2-0 lead.

Dadeville scored a run in the top of the third, on a run scoring single by Zane Medley

In the third, Wilkinson hit his second double in as many at bats, and after advancing to third on a wild pitch, crossed home on a sacrifice fly by Curry and extended the lead to 3-1.

Not to go away quietly, Dadeville scored three runs in the top of the fourth to take their only lead of the game. With the bases loaded, Nick Yocom drove home a run on a ground out, followed by consecutive run scoring singles by Austin Neely and Will Sappington.

With giving up the three runs, Santa Fe responded scoring three more of their own and taking a 6-4 lead. After back to back singles to open the inning, Truman Sleeper hit a two run scoring double to left field. Tieman would follow with a single, advancing Sleeper to third. Curry would follow with a RBI double, his third RBI of the game.

The floodgates opened in the fifth, with Santa Fe scoring four more runs to take a commanding 10-4 lead. Wilkinson’s two RBI single and Curry’s second double of the game and fourth RBI highlighted the scoring.

Wilkinson and Curry lead the Santa Fe offense, each going 3-for-4 with two doubles. Wilkinson also drove in three runs and scored three times.  Tieman picked up the win, throwing 5 1/3 innings and allowing eight hits and four runs, while striking out seven.
