PBR Midwest ProCase: Quick Hits

By Midwest Scouting Staff

For the past three years, the ProCase – Midwest has served as an early identifier for the top prospects in the class. Yesterdays event at Silver Cross Field in Joliet, Illinois was more of the same. Over 40 rising seniors went through a pro-style workout and then played a seven-inning game.

Today we take a quick look at some of the notable performances.

QUICK HITS

+ Jack Krumbach was arguably the MVP of the day. The highly-athletic outfielder started his day running a 6.49, the top 60 the event. Krumbach, a left-handed hitting Xavier commit, then proceeded to hit two of the hardest balls of the day during game play. Krumbach turned on

ARMS

+ The top arm of the event was arguably RHP Michael Doolin (Andrean, IN), a Vanderbilt commit. At 6-foot-3, 200-pounds, Doolin works with a long, loose and extremely easy arm out of a high ¾ slot. The sturdy right-hander seemingly was playing catch with his fastball that jumped through the zone at 92 mph. Doolin should be a high-follow for pro scouts moving forward.

+ RHP Griffin Holderfield (Oak Park-River Forest), a 6-foot-3, 215-pound, right-hander committed to Creighton flashed the firmest velocity of the day, topping at 93 mph. Holderfield also flashed a sharp slider at 78 mph.

ILLINOIS COMMITS

+ The fighting Illini had three commits on hand that should have them excited about the future. RHP Grant Leader (Lyons Township, IL) is highly-competitive with a four-pitch mix. His fastball jumps out of his hand and touched 91 mph.

+ Brody Harding (Moline, IL) and Xavier Watson (South Milwaukee, WI) were two of the top middle infielders in attendance. Both defend with body control, athletic infield actions and enough arm to play anywhere on the diamond. Harding has a smooth left-handed swing to boot.

ARKANSAS COMMITS

+ Arkansas, fresh off a runner-up finish in the College World Series had three impressive recruits in attendance. Nathan Stevens (Waunakee, WI) was one of the top hitters in attendance. The left-handed hitter, has advanced bat speed and the ball jumps off his barrel. Stevens also was 78 mph from the crouch and had pop times as low as 1.98.

+ Arkansas also has two of the more intriguing right-handed hitters who were in attendance, OF Jason Hodges (Marist, IL) and SS Nolan Wosman (Palmyra, MO). Hodges is a physical specimen with electric hand speed and has advanced bat strength; 99 mph exit velocity from a tee. Wosman made some of the loudest contact in his round of BP and the game. Wosman has a fast bat and the ball comes off his bat differently than most. Wosman, who could fill into third base at the next level has a big arm across the diamond at 91 mph.

MISSOURI STATE COMMITS

+ Missouri State had four commits in attendance and they all showed well. Left-handed hitting Drake Baldwin (Madison West, WI) continues to ascend. Baldwin, a left-handed hitter has middle-of-the-order potential with the bat and behind the plate has athletic feet and an easy, accurate arm.

+ There is a lot to like in outfielders Greg Ziegler (Joliet Catholic, IL) and Chase Krogman (Liberty, MO). Ziegler is the quintessential baseball players with tools. Ziegler ran a 6.63 laser-timed 60 and offensively has a smooth swing with easy bat speed and sprayed balls to both gaps in BP. Krogman, a left/left prospect flashed the top outfield arm of the day (93 mph) and showed occasional pop in BP.

+ Cole Schroeder (CBC, MO) is a 6-foot-2, 180-pound, left-handed pitcher with a loose arm and three-pitch mix. The high-pitchability lefty, pounded the zone, flashed an advanced changeup and was up to 87 mph.

STILL ON THE MARKET

+ This year’s event featured a number of high-follow uncommitted prospects still on the market for college coaches. Twins Zach and Drew Lechnir (Kimberly, WI) play the game with a high-motor and are above-average athletes. Drew (6.77 60) is a left/left center fielder with a short, quick swing and Zach (6.84 60) controls the barrel, sprays the ball around the yard and is a steady defender at shortstop.

+ Andrew Pogue (Dunlap, IL) and Joe Glassey (Lakes, IL) are two right-handed arms with intriguing frames from Illinois. Pogue ran his fastball up to 90 mph while Glassey sat 87-88 mph behind a loose, easy ¾ arm.

+ Bennett Theisen (Minnehaha Academy, MN) is a thick-bodied right-hander who ran his fastball up to 90 mph.
