Player Spotlight: 2B/SS Jonathan Maturino (Joplin, 2015)

Jonathan Maturino (Joplin, 2015) is an uncommitted 5-foot-8 160-pound right-handed hitting 2B/MIF.  Maturino runs a 7.16 60, gets down the line in 4.34-seconds. With the bat, he starts with an open stance and high hands.  He has a strong lower half producing fluid rhythm and a fast bat speed.  He has middle-to-pull approach with an 84 mph exit velo.  Defensively, Maturino has an over-the-top release,  and fluid footwork. He gets into a good fielding position and has a clean transfer with a 73 mph positional velo.

Maturino will be an impact player for the Eagles this season, after helping Joplin to a 21-8 record a year ago. He sported a .454 on-base percentage as a junior, cranking a pair of triples in 33 at-bats.  Maturino plays for the Minors Legion Baseball Team in the summer and is currently working in the off-season to prepare for the spring.

Here is a look into the recruiting process of Jonathan Maturino.   

PBR: What schools have expressed interest in you?

Maturino: Longview KC, Hannibal Lagrange University, Independence CC, and a few other Kansas Jay Hawk conference Juco's as well, have expressed interest in me.

PBR: Have you taken any visits, or have any visits scheduled in the near future? If so, what schools, and how recently?

Maturino: I plan on visiting independence next week, and Hannibal Lagrange University sometime soon, probably in the next month.  

PBR: Are you looking for anything in particular in a school? (Example: high academics, certain academic program, local, etc.)

Maturino: I am looking for a school with a good baseball and academic programs. Preferably a school that offers majors in health science or biology, or human services.

PBR: How did you do your junior year? What were your high school statistics? And how did your team do?

Maturino: I've lettered for varsity sophomore and junior year and had an all conference infielder award my junior year. I had a good Junior year, but can always improve and hope to have an even better senior year. My junior year the team was 22-2. I had a .333 Batting Average, .425 Slg, and a .454 Obp. I had 9 out of 10 stolen bases. I hit the two hole for the Joplin Eagles. I had a lot better summer going in to my senior year and increased all my statistics greatly.

PBR: What are you goals for your senior season? Name some players that will play a key role for Joplin in 2015.

Maturino: My goals for my senior season is to lead our team to a Conference and District title. I also hope to increase all of my statistics and have a great Senior season. I hope to Bat well over .400 and have a fielding percentage of at least .950. I hope to do this along with my teammate Christiano Leonardi.  

PBR: What travel team do you play for? Are you playing fall ball with a team?

Maturino: I travel with the Miners Legion Baseball team. Joplin organizes a team during the fall as well as the summer to play in leagues and tournaments.

PBR: Do you play any other sports?

Maturino: I used to play several sports. I played soccer my freshman year but decided to focus strictly on baseball for my remaining high school years.

What are your ACT and GPA?

Maturino: I have a 20 on my ACT and an accumulative GPA of 3.9, but my current GPA is a 4.16. I am also in the top 12% of my class out of 600+.
