Q&A with Dallas Baptist Commit LHP Timothy Ewald (Francis Howell Central, 2018)

Shon Plack
Missouri Scouting Director

Timothy Ewald (Francis Howell Central, 2018) has recently committed to play at Dallas Baptist after high school.

The 6-foot 185-pound left-handed pitcher attended the Winter Pitchers Showcase in Febraury and is a recent addition the the Missouri 2018 rankings.  At the Winter Pitchers Showcase, Ewald posted one of the top velos for lefties at 86 mph.

Ewald has a high three quarters arm slot, and a slight tuck and coil at balance point. He is aggressive down the mound and throws with some effort.  His fastball was at 85-86 mph hitting the bottom of zone with a downhill plane.

He showed a 2-to-8 breaking ball, that starts on a fastball plane.  His change up was at 74-76 mph.  Overall Ewlad has an athletic delivery with strong frame and quick arm speed.

Here is a look inside the recruiting process for Timothy Ewald.

PBR What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it as expected? Easy/Difficult?

Ewald: I expected the recruiting process to be a rocky road, but i knew if i put in the work everyday everything would fall in place. It defiantly had its ups and downs.

PBR: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?

Ewald: Location didn’t really play a factor in my decision, I’ve always wanted to play/live in Texas since i was young.

PBR: Where did Dallas Baptist first see you? How did your relationship develop with them?

Ewald: DBU first saw me in December 2016 at their pitching camp. Once it was over they stayed in touch with me almost everyday and pushed to get me their.

PBR: Who is the best player you have faced in your state, and why?

Ewald: The best player I’ve played against and played with is Missouri State commit Tommy Woods. He’s a prototype athlete with smooth hands and can always barrel a ball up no matter the pitcher.

PBR: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

Ewald: Keep working to get 1% better everyday, the game knows who grinds and who doesn't and it will find you.

PBR: What do you do in the offseason to keep yourself in baseball shape and prepare for the upcoming season?

Ewald: I train at P3 with Brian DeLunas, Josh Kesel, Forrest Herrmann, and Steffen Simmons. Brian and Forrest help me build my velocity and help create efficient throwing patterns, as on the workout side with Steffen and Josh they help me maintain and increase my mobility, stability, and strength with advanced workouts such as PRI.

PBR: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

Ewald: My most memorable moment in my career was playing in the Under Armor Pre-Season All American Games my sophomore year. That is where i played against the best competition around the country.

PBR: What do you like most about Dallas Baptist and what were the key factors in making your decision?

Ewald: I loved Dallas Baptists coaching staff and what they had to offer me as a player and a person. They promised to push me in both ways to become the best version of myself. The pitching program at DBU is one to none and ultimately i felt like they would give me the best chance to make it to the next level.

PBR: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

Ewald: Coming into my decision i had received offers from Missouri State, Southern Illinois Carbondale, Evansville, Northern Illinois, and was talking to other schools.

PBR: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Was there a particular game or event that you feel turned the corner for you?

Ewald: The recruiting process started to heat up my sophomore summer. There was a game at Grand Park Indiana and there was 10+ scouts at mine and my teammates game and after that is when everything switched up for me.

PBR: Preview your high school season for us. How do you feel your team will be? What are your expectations and goals?

Ewald: My high school team is looking very well this year. We have a lot of highly touted players. I feel like we will defiantly improve from last year, ultimately my goal is always going to be making it to state for us, but i expect us to at least finish the season above 500.

PBR: Where do you play in the summer? And what has been your most memorable experience with them?

Ewald: I play summer ball for the Rawlings Tigers 16u Black, and my most memorable experience was playing the Premier Tournament at Lubbock Texas against high ranked club teams.
