Rankings Release: Missouri Class of 2023

The arms and athletes in the Missouri's 2023 Class are impressive not only by recent state standards, but they are among the most talented groups nationally. Seven players from Missouri made our recently released Overall Rankings. Read the full story and see the list, here. Through the Jr. Future Games last summer and a strong showing at winter showcases, we were able to get some first hand looks at this year’s freshman class. When this summer gets up and going, we will surely be getting much more first hand experience with these young players, but for now, here is an initial look at the top 90 players in Missouri’s 2023 class. Below are some thoughts from our National Crosscheck Shooter Hunt.

A slew of frontend arms and elite athletes have thrust Missouri’s class into the upper echelon in the country at this early stage. After getting his feet wet on the national scene at PBR’s Junior Future Games, physically-imposing RHP Brett Norfleet (Francis Howell HS, MO) went on to have a stellar fall on the gridiron where he is quickly becoming an impact recruit in football. His success with the pigskin did not deter his off-season work on the mound, and the 6-foot-7, 208-pound right-hander worked comfortably at 87-89 in February, as his velocity continues to see an uptick with the development of the frame, and paired with a sharp swing-and-miss breaking ball and changeup, he has the makings of a dual-sport impact player at the next level where he may ultimately shine on Saturdays in the fall and Fridays in the spring.

A pair of strong-armed, high-upside pitchers check in just behind Norfleet, and inside the top 60 overall. RHP Eric Podgorny (MICDS, MO) might hold the best feel for spin in the entire 2023 class. He ripped off some devastating 12/6 curveballs at 73-75 in February along with a sharp 77-80 slider. Combine those two with a fastball that touched as high as 91 mph, and the 6-foot-2, 171-pound wiry-athletic pitcher sports impressive upside, and is likely to be a close follow for college coaches moving forward.

LHP Camron Poe (CBC, MO) has the profile and stuff to rise even higher over time. The wide-shouldered, 6-foot-1, 180-pound southpaw showcased a quick arm that produced heavy fastballs at 85-87 in a preseason bullpen in front of PBR Missouri. Regularly pounding the zone with the pitch, and showing feel for 76-77 changeup that profiles well against the fastball, Poe has the makings of a starter moving forward, and appears to just be getting his feet wet on the mound. An impressive athlete, his 69-72 breaking ball takes proper shape, and his overall aptitude for making adjustments could ultimately give it a boost in the future.

This trio of arms is just the tip of the iceberg in the Show-Me State, as four other players found their way into the top 300 including OF/LHP Brysen Nepute (CBC, MO), SS Addison Smith (Liberty HS, MO), LHP Dane Bjorn (Lindbergh HS, MO), and RHP Tate McGuire (Liberty North HS, MO).
