Scout Day: St. Louis Gamers - 2020 Pitchers Analysis

Prep Baseball Report Missouri held the St. Louis Gamers Scout Day on February 18 at All-Star Performance in St. Louis, Missouri. Nearly sixty players participated in the 2022 to 2018 classes.

Player profiles have been updated with running times and velocities along with a video of their performance. 

Players can now updated their profiles with a 
ProspectPlus subscription, while scouts and recruiters can add players on ScoutPlus.

Here is a closer look at the 2020 pitchers from the event, listed in alphabetical order.

2020 Pitchers

Ben Axelrod RHP / MICDS, MO / 2020

Axelrod is a 5-foot-10, 170-pound, right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2020 class. Axelrod has smaller frame and athletic build. Delivery is balanced and athletic, high set up with hands, works from the first base side of the rubber, smooth delivery with some rhythm, clean arm action from a side arm slot, repeats delivery with minimal effort. Fastball is 74-75 mph, arm side run, works his arm side part of home plate, changeup is thrown with fastball arm speed at 66-68 mph, slider is thrown with near fastball arm speed, 10-to-4 shape, mostly gradual action, located to pitcher’s glove side part of the plate.  

Adam Broughton RHP / SLUH, MO / 2020

Broughton is a big and strong 6-foot-1, 220-pound, right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2020 class. On the mound, Broughton’s delivery is simple, a controlled aggressiveness as he works down the mound, in line stride, some effort involved with the delivery, repeats, downhill tilt, throws three pitches for a high percentage of strikes. Fastball shows some sink, arm side run, long arm action, high three-quarter release, sits 74-75 mph, tops at 76 mph, changeups shows late action, fastball arm speed, 64-68 mph, curveball is 62-63 mph, 11-to-6 shape, late downward action, near fastball arm speed.

Gavyn Dockery RHP / Ladue, MO / 2020

Dockery has a strong frame, big body at 6-foot-4, 213 pound, right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2020 class. Dockery has a big and athletic body, aggressive down the mound towards home plate, some effort involved with delivery, long and loose arm action, downhill tilt, throws from an over the top slot, very quick arm. Fastball sits 84-86 mph, arm side run, occasional sink, thrown for a high percentage of strikes, changeup has arm side run, 78-79 mph per hour, thrown with fastball arm speed, curveball has 12-to-6 shape, late downward action, swing and miss type pitch, near fastball arm speed thrown between 84-86 mph.

Brayden Eftink C / RHP / Notre Dame, MO / 2020

Eftink has a strong and stalky build at 6-foot, and right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2020 class. On the mound, Eftink works from the stretch only, aggressive down the mound, long arm action from a high three-quarter release, some effort in delivery, downhill tilt, repeats, fastball is 87-89 mph, strikes at the top of the zone, curveball is 78-79, gradual action, 11-to-5 shape, change up is thrown for strikes at 77-79 mph, near fastball arm speed.

Ryan Fortune RHP / OF / Kirkwood, MO / 2020

Fortune is a 5-foot-11, 185-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2020 class. On the mound, Fortune has an athletic delivery, repeats, downhill, quick arm, clean loose action, high three-quarter release. Fastball is 78-80 mph, high percentage of strikes, arm side run, changeup is 70-71 mph, slight run, fastball arm speed, slider is 69-71 mph, mostly gradual with cutter type action.

Luis Sanchez RHP / 1B / Valley Park, MO / 2020

Sanchez is 6-foot, 185-pound, right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2020 class. Sanchez has a slender build, long limbs and projectable frame. On the mound, Sanchez works from the stretch only, smooth delivery, high leg kick, good direction towards home plate, in line stride, loose arm action, three-quarter release, quick arm, repeatable delivery with normal effort. Fastball sits 84-85 mph, tops at 86 mph, arm side run, thrown for strikes, changeup is thrown with fastball arm speed, 76-78 mph, arm side run, curveball is 64-66 mph, late downward action, 11-to-5 shape, chance to be a plus pitch.

Anthoine Shell II 1B / 3B / DeSmet, MO / 2020

Shell is a 5-foot-11, 215-pound, is a right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2020 class. Shell has a large frame and athletic build, works from the first base side of the rubber, shorter stride length, accelerates down the mound, loose arm, high three-quarter release, throws two pitches for strikes. Fastball is 79-82 mph, arm side run, thrown to both sides of the plate, around the zone, cutter is 70-73 mph, thrown for strikes, late bite.

Grant Straub LHP / OF / Jefferson City , MO / 2020

Straub is a 6-foot, 175-pound, left-handed pitching prospect in Missouri’s 2020 class. Straub has an athletic build, smooth and fluid delivery, works with tempo down the mound, over the top arm slot, clean and loose arm action, commanded 3 pitches well during pitching evaluations. Fastball is 73-74 mph, mostly straight but some arm side run, thrown to both sides of the plate. Curveball is 61-64 mph, thrown with near fastball arm speed, mostly gradual action, some arm side run, 61-64 mph. Changeup is 65-67 mph, near fastball arm speed, arm side run when down in the zone.
