Scouting Notes: No. 15 Rock Bridge blanks No. 17 Francis Howell

With both teams coming off of extra inning losses, and each throwing their ace this afternoon, the stage was set for a confidence building, must win game between Francis Howell and visiting Rock Bridge. Howell RHP Calvin Munson and Rock Bridge RHP Ryan Phillips (right) both came out of the gates quickly, matching each other out for out. Finally Rock Bridge broke through with a run in the fifth inning, and tacked on four more in the top of the seventh to take home a 5-0 win.

Phillips, the No. 10 player in the Class of 2012 and signed to continue his career at Mizzou, threw a one hitter, allowing only one other batter to reach base, via a hit by pitch. Phillips' fastball sat 85-87 throughout the game, with hard late movement; stifling the Howell offense. He also threw a sharp breaking ball to the inside part of the plate and commanded his change up. Phillips introduced a slider in this game, one more pitch to add to his arsenal, as Rock Bridge gets ready for the post season.

Rock Bridge improves to 17-6 and takes on cross town rival Hickman on Saturday. Howell falls to 18-7 and plays host to Parkway West on Friday.

  • Both pitchers consistently worked ahead of the count. Phillips threw seventeen first pitch strikes, while Munson threw twenty.
  • In a great showing of command of his pitches, Phillips threw 76 pitches in the complete game shut out, 58 of which were strikes.
  • Beau Burkett drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning and Ryan Schmidt delivered a two RBI double, recording the only RBIs for the Rock Bridge offense.
  • Rock Bridge senior Kory McDonald was the only player of the game with multiple hits, recording two singles and coming around to score twice.
  • Calvin Munson’s (right) stock keeps rising, with his 85-87 mph fastball, and signs of a plus breaking ball. His bat, prior to today, has also shown some power as of late. Currently Munson is ranked No. 15 in the Class of 2013.
