On Tuesday, June 21st, the PBR Missouri staff traveled to Maryville University in St. Louis, Missouri, to host the St. Louis Top Prospect Games: Upperclass event. This invite-only event featured 40+ noteworthy uncommitted 2023 and 2024 prospects from the state, and it’s been a staple on our summer calendar since 2017.

For more information from this event, including a full look at all the player’s in attendance, click HERE.

Earlier this week we highlighted some of the day's standout prospects within our 'Quick Hits' and followed that up with a Stat Story that spotlighted which players found themselves atop the leaderboards from this event. We followed that up earlier today by mining deeper into the data, analyzing the batted ball and pitch metric leaders found within our 'TrackMan Files'.

Now with the help of our Blast Motion sensors, we're analyzing the swing metrics measured from Tuesday's invite-only event.

Hand Speed (Average)

Rank Name State School Class Pos Hand Speed (avg)
1 Trevor Lovall MO Wentzille Holt 2023 OF 25.9 mph
2 Hayden Bates MO Festus 2024 SS 22.9 mph
3 Xander Schmitt MO Lafayette 2024 C 22.3 mph
4 Kody Brown MO Seckman 2024 C 22.2 mph
5 Grant Fallert MO Valle Catholic 2024 MIF 21.8 mph
6 Peyton Mitchell MO Blue Springs 2023 C 21.5 mph
7 Nicholas Patten MO Blue Springs South 2024 C 21.3 mph
8 Luke Burns MO Desmet 2023 OF 21.2 mph
9 Brady Kehlenbrink MO Parkway South 2024 LHP 20.8 mph
10 Brodie Short MO Lutheran St. Charles 2024 C 20.8 mph

Peak Hand Speed: The observed maximum speed as measured on the handle of the bat (measured six inches from the knob of the bat). Peak Hand Speed will occur prior to the moment of impact, very close to the commit time in the swing when the wrists unhinge.

Bat Speed (Average)

Rank Name State School Class Pos Bat Speed (avg)
1 Xander Schmitt MO Lafayette 2024 C 76.2 mph
2 Trevor Lovall MO Wentzille Holt 2023 OF 75.2 mph
3 Kody Brown MO Seckman 2024 C 74.6 mph
4 Peyton Mitchell MO Blue Springs 2023 C 74.5 mph
5 Hayden Bates MO Festus 2024 SS 72.0 mph

Bat Speed: The observed speed of the sweet spot of the bat at impact. The sweet spot of the bat is measured six inches from the tip of the bat.

Rotational Acceleration (Peak & Average)

Rank Name State School Class Pos Rot. Acc (max)
1 Grant Fallert MO Valle Catholic 2024 MIF 27.9 g
2 Trevor Lovall MO Wentzille Holt 2023 OF 26.6 g
3 John Nisbet MO Eureka 2024 C 25.7 g
4 Hayden Bates MO Festus 2024 SS 21.1 g
^ Grant Dotson MO Jackson 2023 2B 21.1 g

Rank Name State School Class Pos Rot. Acc (avg)
1 Trevor Lovall MO Wentzille Holt 2023 OF 23.2 g
2 John Nisbet MO Eureka 2024 C 21.6 g

Body Rotation: A swing that has the appropriate relative contributions of body and bat rotations is an efficient and Powerful swing that maintains proper sequencing. An efficient baseball swing is one in which the body creates the initial movements, which is then transferred to the arms and out to the bat, thereby maximizing Bat Speed through this proximal-to-distal kinematic sequencing movement pattern.
