St. Louis Winter Open Analysis: POs

Prep Baseball Report-Missouri held the St. Louis Winter Open Showcase at the Sports Barn in Wentzville, MO on February 8.  Over seventy players in the 2021 to 2024 classes attended.

Today, we will take a look at the POs from the day.  Player profiles have been updated with running times and velocities along with a video of their performance. Players listed below are in alphabetical order.

HUNTER BLACKBURN
RHP / 1B / WENTZVILLE HOLT , MO / 2021

Blackburn is a 6-foot-3, 215-pound, right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2021 class. His large frame and big body create a presence on the mound. Delivery is at a slower tempo, simple and compact, controlled leg lift, directional towards home plate, some rhythm as he gets more aggressive down the mound, downhill tilt hides the ball well behind his body, high three-quarter release. Fastball is around the strike zone, 74-76 mph, occasional run, changeup is 71-72 mph, near fastball arm speed, curveball is 67-72 mph, 11-to-5 shape, mostly gradual action but does show flashes of sharp, late bite.

ZACH DANTUONO

RHP / 1B / WESTMINSTER CHRISTIAN ACADEMY, MO / 2021

Dantuono is 6-foot-2, 180-pound, right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2021 class. Large frame, athletic build with room for growth as he develops. Dantuono’s delivery is repeatable, throws with some rhythm and direction towards home plate, downhill, gains momentum as he works down the mound into an aggressive finish, ball jumps out of his hand, quick arm action that works from a high three-quarter release, three quality pitches for strikes. Fastball is 87-88 mph with late run, changeup is 81-82 mph, thrown aggressively with hard fade, slider is 77-78 mph, 11-to-5 shape, change to be a plus pitch in the future.

JUSTIN DODEL
RHP / WATERLOO, IL / 2020

Dodel is a 5-foot-11, 195-pound right-handed pitcher in Illinois’ 2020 class. Dodel has a strong and stocky build, throws with effort down the mound, repeats with an aggressive finish, gets into backside and aggressive with his back hip and high three-quarter release. Fastball sits 73-76 mph, tops at 78 mph, thrown for strikes, commands arm side very well, curveball is 61-63 mph, gradual action, has the  ability to be a good pitch if he continues to develop it, change up is 66-67 mph, thrown with near fastball arm speed, fade, curveball is 61-64 mph, 11-to-5 shape, primarily gradual action, did show flashes of late bite.

JACKSON MITCHELL
RHP / OF / FRANCIS HOWELL NORTH, MO / 2021

Mitchell is a 6-foot-3, 195-pound, right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2021 recruiting class. He has a plus frame, long limbs and room for growth as he develops and fills out. His delivery is smooth and fluid, higher but controlled leg lift, tempo accelerates down the mound into an aggressive finish, high three-quarter release, quick and loose arm action. Fastball sits 82-83 mph, tops at 84 mph, thrown for strikes, curveball has a chance to be a plus pitch, 61-64 mph, thrown aggressively, sharp bite at times, 11-to-5 shape, changeup is thrown aggressively with intent, quality arm side run and fade.

MATHEW NOLAN
RHP / 1B / CBC, MO / 2021

Nolan is a 6-foot-2, 200-pound, right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2021 class. Nolan’s large frame and physical appearance help establish some presence when he is on the mound. Delivery is quicker, works with tempo, gains momentum as he moves down the mound into an aggressive finish, creates angle with his downhill shoulder tilt, repeats delivery for the most part with some rhythm, high three-quarter slot with a quick arm. Fastball jumps out of his hand and gets on the hitter quick, late run to his arm side, 85-87 mph, changeup is 76-79 mph, near fastball arm speed, arm side run, curveball is tight with sharp bite, thrown aggressively, 11-to-5 shape.

JOHN NOONAN
RHP / 1B / DE SMET , MO / 2021

Noonan is a 6-foot, 180-pound, right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2021 class. Noonan has long and lean build with room for growth and he develops and gains strength. Noonan throws with regular effort as he works down the mound, slight uphill tilt with shoulders, hides the ball from the hitter behind his body, adds deception to his delivery with a higher glove side and striding slightly across his body, works from a high three-quarter release. Fastball 78-81 mph, tops at 82 mph, occasional run, around the strike zone, some feel for his curveball at 66-68 mph, mostly gradual action, 11-to-5 shape, changeup is thrown with near fastball arm speed, 70-71 mph with some arm side run. 

DANIEL WISSLERLHP / 1B / FORT ZUMWALT WEST, MO / 2022

Wissler is a 5-foot-11, 150-pound, left-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2022 recruiting class. He has a wirey frame, slender build, room for growth as he develops and physically matures. Wissler has a simple delivery, controlled leg lift, works at a slower tempo, gains momentum as he move down the mound, loose arm action that works from a high three-quarter release. Fastball is 77-80 mph, thrown for a high percentage of strikes, late run to his arm side, changeup is thrown with near fastball arm speed, fading action, 72-73 mph, curveball shows 1-to-7 shape, 66-67 mph, sweeping action, has a chance to be a plus pitch for Wissler as he develop his pitching skill set in the future.
