MS Diamond Notes: Week 5

The Mississippi Diamond Notes is a new feature for 2023 that will focus on highlighting some top performances across the state based on nominations from high school coaches. We will highlight those positions players, pitchers and two-way players every Tuesday of the high school season that are deserving to be highlighted based on their performance.

For now, let's take a look at those players from across the state highlighted in this week's Mississippi Diamond Notes. 

DIAMOND NOTES: MARCH 13TH - MARCH 18TH

Max Garrett RHP / SS / Hancock, MS / 2023 Rankings  StateRank: 98 / POS: 19 Garrett went 5 for 10 on the week with 3 home runs and 7 runs batted in. The senior and East Mississippi CC recruit is hitting .389 on the year for the Hawks.

Tanner Ladner OF / Hancock, MS / 2023 Ladner went 5 for 12 with 2 home runs and 4 runs batted in. The senior and Mississippi Gulf Coast CC recruit is .364 in the for the Hawks.

Konnor Griffin OF / RHP / Jackson Prep, MS / 2024 Rankings  StateRank: 1 / POS: 1 OverallRank: 4 / POS: 2 The user talented dual prospect went 5 for 7 with 2 triples 3 runs batted in and 5 runs scored on the week. The LSU commit is .516 with 13 rbi's for the #2 ranked Patriots.

Baylor Roberts SS / 2B / Saltillo , MS / 2025 Rankings  StateRank: 25 / POS: 4 Slick fielding Roberts went 5-8 on the week with a home run, 4 runs batted in and 6 runs scored. The uncommitted 2025 is now hitting .320 on the season for the #20 ranked Tigers.

Josh Lee RHP / Gulfport , MS / 2023 Rankings  StateRank: 29 / POS: 5 Josh Lee had a stellar performance in his out vs. a solid Madison Ridgeland Academy team. Lee, a Southeastern Louisiana recruit, threw 7 shutout innings, allowing just 1 hit, while striking out 10.

Doc McLaurin / Florence, MS / 2023 Rankings  StateRank: 129 / POS: 8 The uncommitted senior from Florence showed some dual threat ability last week by picking up a win on the mound by throwing 6 innings, allowing 3 hits, 0 earned runs, with 14 strikeouts. McLaurin then showed his muscle by hitting .429 on the week with a homer, 2 doubles, and 4 runs batted in.

Jon Grey Morrisson SS / C / West Union Attendance Center, MS / 2026 Rankings  StateRank: 6 / POS: 2 OverallRank: 233 / POS: 65 Morrison narrowly missed being named Player of the Week after going 5 for 8 with 2 home runs, a triple, and 11 runs batted in. The big 2026 is hitting .318 with 15 rbi's for the Eagles.

Chase Brown C / 3B / Northwest Rankin, MS / 2023 Rankings  StateRank: 135 / POS: 22 The senior continues to show his next level ability. Brown went 4 for 8, 2 doubles, and 4 runs batted in while also throwing out 2 of 3 runners trying to steal. Still uncommitted, Brown is now hitting .346 for the Cougars.

Peyton Lacy RHP / 3B / Pass Christian , MS / 2023 Rankings  StateRank: 34 / POS: 8 Lacy continued his strong start to the 2023 season by throwing a complete game, 1 hit shoutout with 16 strikeouts. The Southern Miss recruit is now 5-0 with a 1.22 ERA, with 48 strikeouts in just 28 innings for the Pirates.

Brendan Necaise RHP / 1B / Pass Christian, MS / 2025 Brendan Necaise is another Pass Christian hurler off to a solid start. The uncommitted sophomore threw a complete game 2 hitter with 11 strikeouts in his latest start. Necaise is now 2-2, carrying a 2.40 ERA with 35 punch outs in just 20 1/3 innings for the Pirates.

Reese Littlejohn RHP / RHP / Oak Grove, MS / 2024 Rankings  StateRank: 85 / POS: 22 Littlejohn continues his solid start to the 2023 season for the Warriors. In his latest outing the uncommitted junior threw 5 innings versus a solid Germantown squad, scattering 3 hits, allowing 0 earned runs, while striking out 7. Littlejohn is now 3-0 with a 1.84 ERA with 30 strikeouts in just 19 innings of work.

Brodie Wedgeworth RHP / OF / Oak Grove, MS / 2023 Rankings  StateRank: 102 / POS: 21 Another Oak Grove hurler with a good start last week was senior Brodie Wedgeworth. The Mississippi Gulf Coast CC recruit threw 6 solid innings, allowing 3 hits, 1 run, while striking out 10. Wedgeworth is now 1-1 on the year with a 1.00 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 21 innings.

Walker Hooks LHP / 1B / Brandon High School, MS / 2024 Rankings  StateRank: 2 / POS: 1 OverallRank: 49 / POS: 9 Hooks continues to impress each time out. The junior had another solid outing last week throwing 7 innings, allowing 0 earned runs, while striking out 6. The big left hander, and Ole Miss commit, is now 4-2 on the season with a 0.66 ERA. Hooks has thrown 31 2/3 innings with 31 strikeouts and just 2 walks.

Hudson Brown 1B / RHP / Northpoint Christian, MS / 2023 Rankings  StateRank: 11 / POS: 1 OverallRank: 423 / POS: 13 Brown will probably not see the mound much, if any next year as the big power hitting first baseman is headed to the University of Kentucky, but he's started off solid for Northpoint in the early going. Brown threw 10 innings this past week for the Trojans, allowing 0 runs, while striking out 14.

Jackson Haden OF / LHP / Oak Grove, MS / 2024 Rankings  StateRank: 97 / POS: 21 Haden had a very solid outing last week going 6 innings, allowing 4 hits, 1 earned run, while striking out 6. The uncommitted junior is now 1-0 with a 1-91 ERA for the Warriors on the season.

Derik Lomax RHP / 2B / Oak Grove , MS / 2023 Another Oak Grove pitcher with a solid outing was senior Derik Lomax. The uncommitted Lomax threw 5 innings, scattering 4 hits, allowing 2 earned runs, while striking out 7.
