MS High School Team Preview: Biloxi Indians

PBR Mississippi Staff

The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Mississippi.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Pearl, MS at Trustmark Park as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Mississippi. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Magnolia State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each MHSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook:

First year Head Coach Hawtin Buchanan begins his tenure at Biloxi with a roster that includes 6 returning starters and 5 pitchers from last year's squad. The Indians finished 14-17 in 2022 and Buchanan feels overall athleticism, team speed, and depth in pitching will help turn things around in 2023.

Top returners for the Indians are seniors Ian Henry (OF/1B/LHP), Aiden Harrison (INF), Bryson Pisarich (1B/RHP), and junior Logan Fontenelle (SS/RHP). Fontenelle leads all returning pitchers with 49 innings from last year while Pisarich finish second on the team in RBI’s and second on the team with 51 strikeouts on the mound.

Other players that will be counted on heavily for Biloxi include seniors Cameron Holt (OF/RHP), Brodie Pearson (1B/C), Ja’Darius Hartley (CF), and juniors Judson Byars (CI/RHP), Robbie Hokamp (C), and Chase DeLaughter (OF/INF). Hartley led all returning players with a .290 batting average and will be asked to repeat his production this season as well.

Underclassmen that may get their chance to step up will be sophomores Will Parker (C/1B/RHP) and Wyatt Pyron (INF/RHP), along with freshman Connor Lofton. Lofton is a 2 time PBR Junior Future Games participant and one of the better rising middle infielders in the state.

Biloxi will go to battle with Gulfport, Hancock, and Harrison Central for the top spot in their District.
