MS High School Team Preview: Independence Wildcats

PBR Mississippi Staff

The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Mississippi.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Pearl, MS at Trustmark Park as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Mississippi. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Magnolia State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each MHSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook:

Independence returns 5 positional starters and 3 pitchers from a roster that went 17-13 in 2022 including a second round matchup with Amory, the eventual 3A state champions. Head coach Jordan Edwards expects his teams experience and overall WILL to be key factors in the Wildcats pursuit of a deep playoff run in 2023.

Top returners include seniors Landyn Lindsey (INF/RHP) and Bryson Davis (OF), along with sophomore’s Miller Owens (INF/RHP) and Dallas Stepp (C). Davis was a big run producer last season and will be expected to contribute once again, while Lindsey leads all returning pitchers in innings and accumulated 50 strikeouts on the bump in 2022. Both Owens and Stepp saw valuable game experience last season and should be ready to take another big step this spring.

An underclassman Coach Edwards will be counting on this season will be 9th grader Braylon Davis who hit an impressive .317 in over 60 at bats in 2022.

The Wildcats will look to take District 2 once again in 2023 with hopes of a deeper run in the 3A class playoffs.
