MS High School Team Preview: New Hope Trojans

PBR Mississippi Staff

The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Mississippi.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Pearl, MS at Trustmark Park as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Mississippi. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Magnolia State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each MHSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook:

The Trojans are coming off a very successful season after going 26-2 and reaching the 3rd round of the 5A State playoffs. The Trojans do find themselves in somewhat of a rebuilding phase though have enough talent to compete with anyone in a short series.

Two seniors that look to lead the charge into the 2023 season will be Hayden Dodson and Sam Malone. Dodson, an East Central CC recruit, should hit near the top of the order and serve as a catalyst for the offense. Dodson will also be a go to arm for Coach Boyd and the Trojans with a fastball that works into the mid 80's along with his competitive nature. Malone, an East MS CC recruit, will lock down a spot on the infield and be counted on to close out games on the mound as well.

Other players expected to make a heavy contribution both include a pair of junior, Colin Perrigin and Landon Moore. Perrigin, another two way college prospect, will hit in the heart of the order and use his plus slider and high 80's fastball on the mound as a huge contributor if the Trojans look make another deep playoff run this season. Left hander Landon Moore has a very polished swing and will provide some extra pop in the middle of the order while being used defensively at first base and in the outfield. Look for him to garner plenty of looks from recruiters soon. Austin Minichino is a very intriguing underclassmen that will provide even more two way potential. The shortstop will help get things started in the top of the lineup and give the Trojans more depth in the pitching staff with nearly 20 innings as a freshman.
As 8 time State Champions, look for the Trojans to find themselves in the mix once again.
