MS High School Team Preview: Oxford Chargers

PBR Mississippi Staff

The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Mississippi.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Pearl, MS at Trustmark Park as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Mississippi. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Magnolia State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each MHSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook:

The Oxford Chargers return 5 positional starters and 4 arms from last year's squad that finished 23-10 with an appearance in the 6A North State Championship. Coach Cade Hoggard feels his team will be very competitive in 2023 with several key hitters returning in the lineup while looking for a couple of quality arms to add depth within the pitching staff.

Top returners from 2022 include seniors Campbell Smithwick (C) and Vaiden Eliis (RHP). Smithwick, an Ole Miss signee, will lock down the catching duties and look to punish opposing pitchers once again from his spot in the lineup. Ellis, a Meridian CC signee, after a solid junior season will be asked to take on a bigger role on the mound.

Juniors Brady Stinnett (3B/RHP), Jack Harper (1B/OF/RHP), and Thomas Rayburn (UTL) will all be asked to step up after contributing heavily to last years success. Rayburn finished second on the team last season after hitting .352, while Stinnett, another Ole Miss recruit, drove in 33 runs and picked up 6 mound wins. Reid Kent (SS) is another junior looking to make some noise after a injury plagued 2022.

Look for the Chargers to have another player or two step up and put them right back in the mix this spring.
