MS High School Team Preview: Sebastopol Bobcats

PBR Mississippi Staff

The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Mississippi.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Pearl, MS at Trustmark Park as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Mississippi. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Magnolia State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each MHSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook:

The Bobcats are coming off an 18 win season a year ago and are not quite in a rebuilding position. If a few players have the year Coach Craig Martin is expecting they will look to advance further after a second round loss to Taylorsville in the 1A state playoffs.

Sebastopol will rely heavily on the talents of senior Jess Johnson, who coming off a successful 2022 season, should provide plenty of run production from the heart of the order. Another senior expected to contribute is corner infielder Makarious Michaels. Michaels also had a solid 2022 season after connecting on 5 of the teams 27 home runs. Junior Jake Kimble is coming off a strong sophomore campaign hitting near the .300 mark and brings even more extra base hit potential into 2023.

An underclassman expected to step up once again is sophomore Luke McGarrity. As a freshman the rangy athletic utility player hit nearly .300 and will be expected to provide even more offense in 2023.

The Bobcats return 6 arms to the mound this spring led by Jess Johnson who leads all returning players with over 40 innings from a year ago. Makarious Michaels looks to be handed the ball often as well.
